Are there any shows or movies that equal The Wire?

Out of all the shows I've watched on cable and network TV, the Wire is probably the grittiest and most realistic I've ever seen. It's completely mesmerizing to watch the characters and the situations that occur in that series. I was sad to see it end.

Anyway for fans of the show, have you found any movies or series that equal it?

For those who have never seen the show, here's a couple of clips on youtube.

Season 1 was good, but I couldn't get into Season 2. It started off so much different...couldn't make it through 3 episodes.

If you liked season 1, you would definitely enjoy the remaining ones. I think each season they tried to add a little something new while still keeping a perspective of the street life.

Season 2 was the worst season. each season focuses on one municipal/public aspect of city infrastructure, while mostly following related drug trade stories.

season 1 Homicide division/drug trade--establishes the anchoring plot for the series
season 2 Harbor
season 3 moves to politics (Mayoral campaign)
season 4 is public education
season 5 is the Media

The Harbor story and characters are mostly ignored outside of season 2, so it ends up being a bit of a dark horse.

Seasons 3 & 4 are absolutely EPIC, though. A must see.

ahhh, ok. I've heard good things about that show, is it anything like Letters From Iwo Jima? I loved that movie.

no, not really. Letters was great though.

If you tend to re-watch movies, you can usually find BoB on BD (providing you have a BD players) for around $35 new, the entire set. (Father's day, Memorial day are annual sales)

It is absolutely worth every penny.

This is true. Season 2 was tough for me to get through, but it does have enough important things that you can't just skip to Season 3. The Wire is hands down the best series I have ever seen.

1 - How the drugs are dealt
2 - How the drugs get into the city
3 - How the money is spent
4 - How the kids get into it
5 - worst season, didn't even watch

5 was damn good, much better than the 2nd season. ...but you wouldn't know as you never watched it, apparently. :hmm:

That season was garbage. Skimmed a few eps, don't care at all about the newspaper BS or the stupid hobo plot or the mayor. Nothing remotely interesting

Episodes 1 and 2 of season 1 were terrible and Season 2 was definitely the worst. Get through those though and the rest is pretty amazing.

Best series ever made. Everytime I watch it I feel like eating steamed crabs or crawfish with beer.

First 2 episodes were hard to get through the first time, it was probably 5 episodes or so before I really got into the series, glad I gave the whole first season a shot.

I admit, I did have to try really hard to get through the first few eps of Season 1. But after that, I was hooked. Any free time I had was watching the series. Season 2 was the weakest and felt disconnected with the series but I still enjoyed it.

However, Seasons 1 and 3 or 4 (The one with Bunny and his experiment) were my favorites.

I second The Shield. It's different in that it's more action oriented and slightly less on story. However, it is just as engaging.

The Shield comes close but The Wire was much better IMHO.

Ever heard of The Sopranos? Though I did love The Wire I thought The Sopranos was a much better show overall.

David Simon, the creator of The Wire just premiered a new show on HBO called Treme. It's about post-Katrina New Orleans. The first episode was solid, and it has Lester and Bunk from The Wire in it.
