First off I know nothing about linux so let's just get that out of the way. It is open source isn't it? I know there are different "flavors" of Linux, which are the most used/most popular? Are any of the versions free? Where might I go to find more resources on this topic?

Microsoft Linux...it's the shiznet

Lindows

Lindows isn't free though...$59.95

They gave me a free copy of the enterprise edition thingy.

I got one on the MSDN subscription as well, Solaris and Apple too

Nah, I signed up for some worthless newsletter from Linspire and filled out a survey. Linspire send me a free copy of their expensive version of their OS. I guess it's called Five-0 or something now, but I must have the initial pre-MS lawsuit version because it's called Lindows.

i'm chiming in with the others in awe that you have no idea if linux was/is free. why do you think it's gotten so popular? ever hear of GNU? i take it that you had done NO research previously and just decided to post on ATOT. while that may be fine for you, you must realize that there are a ton of folks here that are going to jump down your throat for it. a little research does help -- a lot.

i'd recommend fedora (the new redhat). but if you're THAT new, you may not be ready yet... do a lot of research first. read howtos, and learn that google is your friend. look at such forums as www.linuxquestions.org. don't install it on hardware that is old and probably doesn't have linux drivers for it. you'll need to learn a lot, and if you're only now learning that linux is free, you have a LOT of catching up to do.

Check out Distrowatch to download your falvor.

Try Google around for more info and try out a few live disk distros such as Knoppix, Kanotix, Damn Small Linux, SLAX, MEPIS, and last but not least Ubuntu. Then install a few distros to find your niche.

Lindows was free if you signed up for the newsletter. But, that was before the name change.
