I am moving to Richmond, Va to go to the ITT Technical Institute for my B.S. in Information Technology in security. I was wanting some feed back if this would be a good degree to get and if the area is a good place for computer work IT related or not. I have a 2 year degree in Computer Applications/networking. Any opinions? Looking for all and any input.

The standard help desk job starts at 35k. Richmond is a good city to live for just 35k, however, you gotta know people in high places to even get interviews. However, part time "consulting" positions maybe available at places like IPC. In fact we employ 2 contractors from IPC and one of our permanant guy used to be from IPC.

There are a handful of people on AT that also lives in Richmond or close to it.

There's a good change I get to go to Miami or Puerto Rico for the Prudential merger around June 18th, and then after that Santiago, Chile.

There are tons of IT centers near Innsbrook in Glen Allen. You can get a cheap aparment for about 700 or so downtown. It is about 20 minutes away.

You can also live in Westend which is between Glen Allen and downtown. But there are a lot of "heroin" element in that area.

I live in Southside, about 40 minutes away from Glen Allen, we have more rednecks in this area, but quiet and peaceful. My boss also lives around here.

Only thing I don't like is that we don't have many techno clubs.

I would imagine that Capital One and Bank of America would have some IT openings within its locations down there. Heck, Big Tobacco has a need for some good IT as well.

Only moved twice in my life after college. Job related, and no one can tie me down, I followed the money. because money buys food.

btw, it looks like my co-worker wants to go to Puerto Rico, so I'm definately going to Chile for the week after that! Yay.... I can immerse myself in Latin culture and food. I might be able to ski too.

ITT may be very expensive for what you get.

Most places do not consider a degree from them a true BS.

They charge you through the nose for tuition based on what they thinkl you can borrow.

Cost wise you may be better getting a degree from a regular state school and it will carry more weight.

If you chose to go to ITT, chekc on their graduatioin placement rate and follow up with the companies that they actually state that they place people.

The length of time that a person stays may not be stated by their recruiters.

Welcome - I did the same research that was stated for my son-in-law.

In 98, ITT in the Fort Lauderdale area was attempting to recruit him.
Tutiion $$ was like $21K over 2 years.
Loans and grants that they stated could be obtained came out to within $20 of the tutition cost.

Seemed suspicious to me.
I was in Indiana at the time and went under cover to a campus there.
I have a MS Computer Engineering but pretended that I was trying to break into the computer field as a tech.

The tutition costs changed but still came close to the "available funds".
They provide lists of companies that hired their people, however, the longevity was not "available" when I pressed for details.

The quality of schooling did not impress me for what should have been required for a BS degree.
To much non-technical learning was missing.

I know that area well, there's a Starbucks near there. a good Vietnamese place down the road, a good fast Italian place called Apollo, a Japanese steak house called Kanpei, A Korean BBQ place near Chippenham parkway called YingbingGon or something like that. I've personally dined at so many restaurants in that area I could write a travel guide.

Yes, it is expensive as my first 2 years cost me 15k using Gov't backed loans. and I expect the next two years to be over 20k. UOP was going to cost me 23k.

Do you think the area near the school is a good area? Sounds like it is.

I been living in Richmond for about .5 years, but I work at King George (1 hour north of Richmond).
I been looking for IT job in Richmond area because I do not like long drive.
Anyway, it seems like there is not much IT jobs in Richmond, especially any job that require clearence. I do not really want to give up my clearence for future job marketablity.
I guess I will wait until my wife graduate and move to DC area.

anyway, welcome to Richmond area.

Here is good place to start I guess.

Try the Bank Of America huge building there in Richmond (although should be changed to Bank of India). They have a huge IT support building there. While a lot has gone to India, some remains here such as in the E-commerce Dept.

Clearances can be inactive for two years without any problems getting is re-activated.

If you are working in King George, then you probably must be at Dahlgren. Only place in the area that would have a need for clearances.
