i'm surprised to see that at my gym, there are far more fit people than fat people.
ratio is probably 90:10, fit to fat.

either the fat people in this town are too lazy to work out, or all the fit people here used to be fat and became fit by coming to the gym.
i'm leaning towards the latter.

At my apartment's gym, it is usually people with beer bellies sitting and watching the game on the TV.

It's essentially half and half.

What cracks me up is a ton of not so fit people doing isolation exercises that do jack and other people doing exercises in ways that make it easier and destroys their back.

65:35 fit overall. 9:1 fit in the free weight area. 7:3 fit in the machine area. 7:3 fat in the cardio area.

I work out at Bally's so it's pretty much quarter fit, quarter fat, and everything else in between.

2:1 fat:fit if I had to guess it's a pretty big gym and I don't pay a lot of attention to the people on the cardio unless there is a hottie that catches my eye between sets.

It also depends on what you're considering fit. If they're thin but have nasty cottage cheese legs are they fat or fit? I typically only consider people that look like they're in the gym 3+ days a week, every week, fit. The others may not be fat but get put in that category due to lack of options in the OP. Fat to me is being obese, or at least visibly over weight.

I don't work out at a gym.

Do see very fast people and people waddling when I'm out running though.

I have a very high amount of respect and admiration for the fat/slow people getting out and attempting to work out. Makes you wonder how many people are sitting at home, eating donuts and watching the Tube.

I agree with above post. Laughing may be an immediate reaction to an image of a bigger person on struggling on a treadmill/elliptical but above all I respect that they're in the gym.

I go to the YMCA, and I'd say the ratio is about 1/3rd fit, 1/3rd average, 1/3rd fat. Things get skewed in January though because of the New Year's resolution crowd, lots of plump housewives and guys with beer guts who you know will be gone by the time spring rolls around.

I mostly agree, but it's frustrating when all the treadmills are occupied by people who're slowly trundling along and barely breaking a sweat.

that's true too. The most annoying are the ones constantly on their phones/having 30minute conversations as they stroll along.

I used to be fat and never went to the gym to exercise. The only time I went to the gym was on Friday, when I ran there as part of my daily running routine outdoors. And I only ever spent 45 minutes in there just doing some free weights. I hate being confined to the same space and I'm pretty sure running outside is better than on a treadmill.

At any rate I lost over 50 pounds so I was doing something right.

I'd say about 75% of the people at my gym here in Vegas are pretty fit. Far more than the gyms I'm used to in Oregon. Image is very important here. Or so I'm told.

9:1, fit:fat in NYC (there are very few fat people in Manhattan).
1:1 fit:fat in Orange County, CA (suburbia)

At least they are at the gym doing something I guess right? I've never been to the gym but I am not fat by any means so I can't really answer this question.

At the college gym, it's almost entirely undergrads with a few of us grad students sprinkled in, so it's perhaps 75% average weight (neither overweight nor fit), 15% overweight, and 15% in excellent shape.

At the nearby Bally's, surprisingly, I'd say it's about the same. Then again, their customer base seems to largely be current or recently-graduated students.

Where I live, there are lots of "thin" people at gyms and exercising outside vs. much fewer fat people. Of course being in S. Florida, "thin" could just mean "I can afford a surgeon".
