i have a lite-on 4x 411s DVD burner. i have burned several data DVDs with 2x Imation DVD-Rs using Nero 6. all the DVDs have is data files, and i didnt use anything other than the default Nero Burning Rom settings.

i had an old Toshiba DVD-ROM drive, and it wouldnt read my burnt DVDs.

thinking it was because it was an old drive, i just purchased a brand new Sony 16X DVD-ROM from newegg. it was not able to read my discs either.

so going on another recommendation i tried the Asus 16X DVD-ROM drives from newegg. it was not able to read my discs either.

both the 411s and my Pioneer 107 DVD burner can read the discs fine. so why cant the DVD-ROMs?

possibilities:

1. im somehow burning the DVDs wrong. but Nero's standard data DVD settings should burn just fine shouldn't they?
2. the media itself sucks
3. the DVD-ROMs suck

can anyone suggest a solution?

is there a program i can use theat will tell me all the characteristics of a burnt media (like -/+R, multisession or not, UDF or not, etc), so that i can see if there is anything strange about it that would prevent other drives from reading it easily?

edit: ok i used Nero InfoTool which is part of Nero 6 Ultra

Disc info is:

Type: DVD-R
Capacity: 4.33GB
Layers: 1
Supported Speeds: 2x
Blank Capacity: n/a
Manufacturer ID: CMC MAG.
File System: ISO9660, Joliet
Date: 1 April 2004
Publisher: n/a
Application: Nero Burning ROM

unless the file system indicates it, i dont see where it would say if its multisession or not. but if i try to continue multisession using nero, it wont let me.

i dont think this is an issue of coasters as the burners read the DVDs fine

Are you running the latest firmware and burning software on your DVD burner? If the Sony drive can't read your discs there must be a problem with either them or how you're burning them. Sony drives can usually read pretty much every DVD format out there.

It's also possible that the DVD-ROM's need the firmware, since they cant read the discs.

wicktron,

got any reccomended brands of CD-R's?
I need to get some better ones.

DVD-R's too

Who makes stuff that works well, at good price?

I'm used to buying CD-R's buy the 100 spindle $10-25, but my discs usually suck, and lots of coasters.
And I just traded my DVD-ROM + 30GB HDD for a dual format DVD burner, so I need to get some media in both formats (CD+DVD)

Oh yeah, one other thing, which format is better for movies, and which is better for data?

Thanks

DVD-R is for movies (plays in more entertainment systems). DVD+R is for data (could put a movie format on it but probably won't play in entertainment system).

if you get coasters burning cd-r's something is wrong with your system. i've used totally cheap generic drives made in china that have never burned a coaster with generic horrible discs. just don't burn faster then your system or discs can handle.

gotta wonder whats with that +- stuff, wouldn't it be more logical to have RM for movie? RD for data? bah

For media, Taiyo Yuden for CD-R and DVD +/- R without a doubt.
For TY CD-R, visit Acca
For TY DVD+R, the 4x Samsung DVD+R media here at Newegg are said to be TY, I haven't bought for myself, so I can't truly confirm.

I've had no problem with DVD+R movies in a Sony, Panasonic, Apex, Mintek, and Pioneer set-top DVD drive. I would agree, however, that DVD-R has slightly better compatibility overall. DVD+R, however, has superior error correction, which is more important for me since I know all players I have tested on accept DVD+R. Also, 8x DVD+R is widely available, so it saves you time.

I have a very old Sony DVD player (which plays nothing but DVDs) and am using LiteOn DVD burner ..... I have tested both DVD-R and DVD+R ( which is faster @ burning ) with multiple brand names and it plays very well on the comp and the player .... I would suggest a firmware update ...... Ritek is a good brand ..... just updated firmware on a friends comp which has a NU tech DVD burner and he was not able to get anything on -R .....after the update, it works like clock work.... hope this helps

I bet this is a really old DVD-ROM drive, right? Maybe 4x or slower? It may be a pre-writeable format drive possibly?

Why don't you search for it at DVDRHelp Does it support DVD-R or +R?

As for the Sony, hmmm.
