Are these caps still good?

The remarkable thing is that evidently a stopped fan caused this board to quit. Not having any alternative (production machine), once I got the fan cleaned, lubed and spinning this 7600 GS pcie card works fine, even with the caps like this!

In 30 odd years of being a technician I'd never seen anything quite like it still working...

I imagine they will work until they don't. That's what happened to many of the motherboards back in the early 2000s when they were unknowingly (what they claimed) bad caps from Chinese suppliers. Even to this day, most good PSUs and motherboards all proclaim "100% Japanese capacitors", although Chinese caps have really improved in quality. I think it will be a long time before that changes.

yes that looks... bad

but, if the card is still working it should be relatively simple to replace the caps!

Just get the names of the caps.. and buy new ones.. Caps are like 10 cents each online depending what you get and using a soldering iron to remove and reinstall them is easy

Those are solid electrolyte capacitors, so they won't leak.
We must not be looking at the same picture. Liquid electrolyte or no, somehow they still managed to leak. I took issue with the idea that the leaking was yet to come when they are already blown wide open with their contents partially ejected.

It's a bit subjective, but the word "leak" is usually used to mean the escape of a liquid, not a solid.

Who cares how you define leak at this point, the caps are clearly bad and it was a pretty stupid question to ask.

FZ caps are just normal wet electrolytics without a sleeve, iirc.

They are made to look like solid caps, but they have vent cuts.

I thought so as well, but after the other user took issue with my previous comment, I was beginning to 2nd guess if I read the specs wrong.

I remember that issue with the motherboards. This video card was made in China in the mid 2000s. Looks like the rumors about bad Chinese caps were true...

I'm surprised that this video card is still functioning. The caps must not be shorted? Whatever their function it must not have been critical...

Post this topic over at Bad Caps forum to see what they say. I'm sure the caps will need to be changed, but at least you can get an idea of quality of caps that can replace them (since not all caps are equal even if same specs).

They are growing hair. If they somehow crossed that line from non-life to life, then they can't be very good caps anymore.

They are fine. Usually growing hair in places you don't want is a natural sign of aging.

Have you ever seen a grandpa's nose? Is there way more hair than you would want? Sure.

Does he still work? Yep!

I wasn’t talking about the solid. I was talking about the gas and/or liquid that vented and propelled the solids. They definitely leaked!
