Still good? LOL, they can't be that old, especially the X2... which BTW is a great processor by anyone's standards.

What sockets are they on?

AM2...

how does the x2 3800 stack up to the Pentium Ds ? it should be much faster than a 2.8 right ? how about the 3.4ghz Pentium D ?

Think of it like this...Higher clock speeds for Pentium Ds doesn't always mean better.

It would take the best Pentium D of the line to equal or better the X2 3800+ at stock speeds, even then the Pentium D would lose in the gaming ones. The Pentium D is no slouch, but its a well known fact it cant stand up to amd's offering (unless price or c2d are factors)

Comparing the X2 3800 to the 3.4 Ghz 945, I'd personally pick the 945, especially if overclocking wouldn't be done. An X2 3800 is about as fast as a 3.0 Ghz dual-core Pentium D, if neither is overclocked.

in terms or raw performance at stock speed, the P-D 3.4ghz will be a bit faster than an X2 3800+.

But it will also consume significantly more power, produce significantly more heat, and have less overclocking headroom (on average).

It takes the 945 PD to get at the 3800x2 price/performance and performance/watt. There is no reason to get any PD's. Unless your budget Absolutely demands it (then get a 805 or 915), or if you will definitely upgrade to a Core2 in the future and thus get a PD with a Core2 capable mobo.

Otherwise, get a $50-$70 mobo and get a very decent 20% cpu oc on the x2 3800+. You would probably need to get a higher cost PD board that will oc nice and oc the cpu to 4ghz to get a similar oc/performance increase.

IMO, there is no reason to get a PD unless you will definitely be upgrading to a Core2 down the road. Otherwise, the cheapest X2 will give you very close to the same results as the fastest non-ee PD. Just MO.

I'm not going to get a C2D anytime soon...coz its very expensive and i cant afford it...
that is why i'm looking at the 3500+ and X2 3800+...but do not know how they stack up...are these considered value or mainstream procs ?

the 3500 could be considered value while the x2 can be considered value dual core. otherwise consider that the 3500 will be faster if you run one app at a time or primarily just run non dual core enabled games.

the x2 runs like a 3200 in non dual core games but handles multitasking very well much better than the 3500 would.

take a look at anandtech's reviews of the core2duo procs just to see a comparison between the pent 965ee and the x2.

when the pent beats the x2 it isn't by much and vice versa. but one costs$1000 and one is $150, do the math.

YEAH BUT NEARLY EVER X2 3800+ reaches 2.4 GHz easy. and that single core 3800+ speed.

at OP, 3800X2 is fairly mainstream/high end right now 3500+ would be considered mid/low .. it would not be a good decision to go with the 3500+ this day in age
