Are these the signs of a faulty or dying GPU?

Hello,

I am getting some problems with my GPU and I am wondering if this is a sign of my GPU Dying. Since few days when playing games I am getting flickering textures or dots as shown in the video here. Notice those blue blocks on screen in the dark areas.

In games like Tomb Raider, the textures are shimmering as shown.

My GPU is a Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ Special edition running at stock voltage and clocks.

Your card is pre-overclocked and comes with a BIOS switch (on the back, inside a backplate cutout, see the pic bellow), the two profiles available through that switch are significantly different.

• The Performance BIOS runs the GPU at 1430Mhz boost and the memory at 2100Mhz.
• The Silent BIOS runs the GPU at 1340Mhz and memory 2000Mhz.

You can check which is your current profile by simply opening AMD Wattman and looking at GPU and VRAM frequency tables. You can also use HWInfo64 as a useful tool to monitor the GPU while running 3D intensive apps since in the Sensors Tab you can check temps and also a GPU Memory Errors indicator.

If you're running the card in Performance mode (which I assume you do) the first thing you should do is lower the clocks to stock, meaning 1340Mhz for GPU and 2000Mhz for memory. You can do this by either using the BIOS switch or by using AMD Wattman to create a custom profile. This will lessen the load on all components. You should also increase fan speed to something like 1200 - 1500 RPM if it's not doing that already (for the purpose of this test you need to lower load on components while increasing available cooling)

If lowering the frequencies removes or delays the problem then you're likely having a thermal issue: this means you can try a new configuration that keeps the card running within spec (either run the lower stock clocks, improve cooling of the card and/or case, or both).

If the problem persists in the same way no matter what you do to help the card, consider using whatever warranty options you have.

The problem disappeared in Tomb Raider when I switched to DirectX 11 mode.

I am going to try the BIOS switch method and see if that helps. I had no issues in Far Cry 5 with 1430 MHz clock speed.
