Sure - we used to have more ppl from Europe on the forum who would that (because of high electricity prices). Also, some folks with mITX systems.
Thank </deity> its mostly blown over. Prices are still -high-, but not insane or extreme anymore. At least for now.

But I doubt prices will ever return to the level they had last autumn/winter. That was beyond both insane and extreme.

The one plausible way in which that could happen is an invasion of Taiwan where all of TSMC's production ends. If that happens, I'll be ordering a new card 5 seconds after hearing the news.

Wait 5 seconds? More like 5ms.

If that conflict ever blows up (pun might be intended), electricity prices are going to be the least of anyone's worries.

I'm from the EU and from a country with above average (for the EU) electricity prices. And yet I still don't see people upgrade just for efficiency.
Hey, just sharing stuff I've seen posted here before. A few people have chosen new parts based on lower power consumption. Not saying it’s common.

You might not be able to do it in time, to be sure you should always make sure to have the best GPU in case you might have to hold on to it for 5 years+.

Alright Boss Babes, now's your chance to get in on the ground floor with me on this great new business opportunity. I had to raid my kid's college fund, but I have a whole garage full of GPUs ready to go. Haters may laugh now, but they'll all be eating their words when my GPU flipping business is a huge success.

Do you have someone in a different timezone who would alert you? Imagine sleeping through the night, waking up and finding out that GPU prices have gone up 10X in a matter of hours because Taiwan is under attack.
I do know a few expats in the Philippines, so I suppose it could be arranged...

Not that I'd want to wake up to the fact WW3 just kicked off a few minutes ago.

WW3 is currently being fought in Ukraine. Their spirited resistance to the Russian invaders is what has kept the war from going global and/or nuclear. If Ukraine had been decapitated in 3 days per original invasion planning, all the Baltics and Poland would have been next and the first real test of Article V would have begun. Slava Ukraïni!

TSMC is vital to the global economy for modern CPUs and GPUs. Unlike Ukraine which has little easily defensible terrain outside of the western portion, Taiwan is a naturally defensible mountain fortress. I hope Xi Jinping is wise enough to avoid aggression. Because otherwise the majority of a Chinese invasion fleet catastrophically sinking would be enough to end his regime.

Of course, if millions of angry gamers across the world didn't get to him first. Never underestimate an angry gamer.

You do know that ~ 1/2 of the Taiwanese electorate (the previous ruling, and now opposition party) want's to reunify with China?

I was at a best buy today. outside the store looking empty a sif it or the company were gonna do a bk the only cards they had in stock were low end 3000 cards and a few RX6000s or 5000. total of 7 cards for both teams in stock, no price and I didn't want to ask the hippo at the front desk to give me the prices. They had an equally but larger goliath security guard sitting on two chairs. that may be why the store looked ransacked. Sad experience all around. their processor choices were i3 and i5s from 13th gen going by the silver corner pocket. Some ryzens but I couldn't make out which.

- Retail is getting the absolute crap kicked out of it by online shopping. Most big box stores are looking worse for wear nowadays and in the consumer electronic space its especially rough.

Even Targets, which historically execute the "middle class Walmart" thing almost perfectly every store I've ever been in look more and more in shambles between my 6 month visits.

The target i sometimes shop at had a major remodel the summer just before covid hit the world. that was a fun experience im sure company wide because other locations went through major over hauls. retail got a nice bump in sales during covid but as covid is a long gone dream now for most of the civilized world we're back to ordering online because its simpler. it is for the most part especially if you're a consumer like me that prefers specific versions of a product and no one near you carries it. the target shopping experience has never been fun. wide main aisles with narrow product aisles, the scent of the cafe and he popcorn stall make for a nauseating experience.
