I was thinking the same thing, but unless removing LHR from the drivers improves performance elsewhere (and maybe it does), there's no financial benefit to NV removing it now, assuming miners aren't gonna buy more cards. Not sure how many suckers are willing to keep buying cards now that ETH mining is dead and ETC + ETHW are categorically failing to take up the slack.

It doesn't make sense to carry it forward. It's in there doing pointless checks it doesn't need to do, so it's active software that you want to have some test cases around. I'd get rid of it.

More likely they just wanted to cut meaningless code from the driver. Extra code doing things that needs to be tested and validated is just shouldering tech debt for no reason.

LHR is a feature they are no longer supporting.

You would think, that possibly, if this were intentional, that they might make a (small) announcement somewhere, like on GeForce.com or something. Or maybe just a technical note that LHR is deprecated in current/future drivers going forward.

Another possibility is that this driver has "secret sauce" that it's not supposed to have..

There is probably just a stigma with the "LHR" tag. By removing it there is no thinking that the card is lower performance and there is full value in all of them.
I think its funny that all it took was a driver change to remove it. Makes you wonder if that was figured out by the hackers long ago and the miners just hacked them to work normal?

Looking at sold listings, there are some good deals that were had. RX 6800 XT’s and RTX 3080 10GB sold below $500 are showing up.

Still a lot of money for a used product. The 3080 I got is power locked to 320W, and it’s junction temp reaches 107C at full tilt. I wouldn’t want someone to use this particular GPU at stock voltage long term.

We do need another RX 480 moment.

I think removing LHR on the 30 series when the first 40 series card came out was always the plan.

The 6900XT is an interesting option as I've been looking for something to support 4K well in a gaming-oriented HTPC. (It currently has a 3070, which is acceptable for 4K depending on the game.) The only downside is that it's buying old tech (at a decent price) when we have no idea of RDNA3's performance and pricing.

EDIT:

Actually, that XFX GPU is too long to fit in my Torrent Compact anyway.

Crypto miners still buying graphics cards! Talking another 18 months plus now till trend is gone.
People hang on to stocks for a long time praying that they will rebound. Some win, some lose.
For me a video card isnt an investment. Im not making a dime from it. Im just looking for the best bang for the buck "while supplies last" kind of deal. It may be my last one. Im sure not going to put the household budget at risk in this volatile economy that could come crashing in on us at any moment, or sky rocket into great prosperity. Im just going to enjoy having what I end up with for 5-10 years and laugh at all those miners losing sleep.

Here in Denmark the price difference between the cheapest rx6900xt and a rx6900xt strix liquid cooled, is only about $55. So $705+25% sales tax.

This really amazes me there isn't a flood of used mining cards like we saw in 2014 once it became no longer profitable to mine on gpus.
I'm wondering where they all went, too.

Edit: In North America, at least, Winter is fast approaching, and many consumer / hobbiest miners are choosing to "keep mining" to heat their homes, rather than "lose money" by selling their GPUs.

That, and you've got YouTubers like RedPandaMining and Hobbiest Miner, to name a few, that "aren't selling".

Contrast to SonofaTech, who was tearing down his farm and selling cards, last I saw.

Still what about the big mining farms? Texas became a real hotbed for mining once China made it illegal.

For this to add up assumes free or cheap electricity. Because otherwise pure electrical heating is about the most inefficient and expensive way to heat your home.

I don't really want to think what it'd cost heating my home with wall panels right now, but some back of napkin math puts it at somewhere around 80-120.000DKK (~US$ 10.500 - 15.800). Assuming I'd need 10-15MW over winter.

Electricity is much cheaper in Texas. That 15MW would only cost me 1900 USD (~14341DKK.) Lots of people use electric heating here. (Then again we barely need heating, I turn mine on for maybe 2 months out of the year. It is currently 90F/32C where I am at.)

Electrical heating is fine for occasional use, but it's not something you want to rely on for 5-6 months a year, with the occasional sub-zero (C, not F thankfully) periods.

For comparison Denmark is about the same latitude as about mid-Canada (~56° North), although we have a milder coastal climate. Thank </deity> and the gulf stream for that.

Edit; the 10-15MW was an extrapolation of what my heatpump uses yearly. Between 2.5 and 3MW depending on how cold it gets. Converting to pure electrical would land between 10 and 15MW.

I got tired of waiting for the prices to drop. My 1070ti died last week and I got lucky on a XFX Merc 6900xt for $950 cad on Amazon. The card is huge! It didn't even fit in my Corsair 680x with the 360 aio in the front, so I picked up a 7000x and refreshed my build. This card is super cool and quiet, and fast! It's like 2.5-3x faster than the pascal card!
