No

You run whatever the owner's manual recommends. Just because it's turbo doesn't mean it needs premium.

Warranty Manual states:

Volvo recommends premium fuel for best performance,
but using 87 octane1 or above will
not affect engine reliability.
Volvo engines are designed to achieve rated
horsepower, torque, and fuel economy performance
using premium 91 octane fuel. In
demanding conditions, such as operating the
vehicle in hot weather, towing a trailer, or driving
for extended periods at higher altitudes
than normal, it may be advisable to switch to
higher octane fuel (91 or higher) or to change
gasoline brands to fully utilize your engines
capacity, and for the smoothest possible operation.

May switch around to see if it fuel economy.

Crap! There is not a single XC60 in the configuration I want in the whole region. Thus, a custom order would have to be made with a delivery date of Sept.

However, they have a demo with <5000 miles that's loaded that they would be willing to sell me. http://www.bostonvolvo.com/mvc/inve...pe/Sport+Utility/year_low/2011/year_high/2011

Will go by tomorrow for a test drive.

Hey I bought parts from Boston Volvo. Well it was a small stockpile of oil filters, washers, and o-rings. Great guys in the parts department.

Good to hear. Just got back from testing the demo. I really like the ride and how it handles. But it has more options than I want and b/c of the low inventory they're not willing to meet my price.

However, they did offer me the opportunity to order a 2012 model. They gave me a brochure even though it hasn't been announced yet and gave me pricing. 2012 T6 engine goes up from 300 to 325hp and 325 to 354 lb.-ft of torque. Transmission gets a sports mode and other handling/steering improvements. Base price goes up $1.5k

Unfortunately, delivery is still in the Aug/Sept time frame at the earliest.

adding a turbo to an engine is much like adding variable valve timing. more stuff to break, but in a well-designed setup not likely to cause an engine to be any less reliable.

both of those things are very sensitive to dirty oil, though. moving parts in VVT setups get stuck and oil passages get clogged. for turbos, the crud can cause wear to the bearings inside the turbo (leading to oil going down the intake or out the exhaust), and sludge can eventually plug the oil lines going to it. coolant is notsomuch a worry as long as it's present.

the new T5's and T6's seem like pretty good motors. they've been refined over a long period (volvo has made multiple 4, 5, and 6 cylinder versions of what is internally a very similar design since the early 90's). old T5's are likewise pretty decent. it's only the old 6's that i would avoid like the plague- more for trans issues than anything turbo-related.

Even those aren't bad... there was a software issue in the adaptive shifting control, either you drop it into manumatic mode and there's no problem, or get the software updated and there's no problem. At least this was my experience with my Dad's 1999 (1998?) S80 T6.

nah, the trans in the XC90 T6 is like a 75k part, tops, then it just dies. the S80's don't have as many issues because they're lighter, but trans failures are still very prevalent, even in the non-turbo models. that plus the copious electrical issues in the earlier S80's (they gradually got more reliable) makes it a car to stay away from at just about any price.

Bumping this. Bought a car at copart, its the XC90 T6 with 135k on it.. hoping the transmission is ok because I plan on fixing the fender/bumper and trying to flip it. Paid 1001.77 out the door after copart fees/taxes.

Is that the one with the 4T65-E transmission?
135K on the odometer?
Flip it quick and make sure you stress to the buyer "as-is" condition.
At that mileage it might already be on it's second transmission already.

Ha, yes, however, it looks like the transmission was replaced sometime in its life and shows no signs of any issues. Tranny fluid was clean also, but not new. I am debating if I want to sell it and my Mercedes ML500 (with 67k on the odo), or keep it, or what. A tranny rebuild does not scare me, and the parts are around $300 or so. Looks relatively easy to drop the engine and tranny in this vehicle as well. To top it off, my wife has been driving it lately and really likes it. ugh..
