If by modern, you mean since mid 1980's.
I did. It's probably a bit telling that I consider the 1980's "modern", but oh well. I'm getting old.

No
You run whatever the owner's manual recommends. Just because it's turbo doesn't mean it needs premium.
Volvo recommends premium fuel for best performance,
but using 87 octane1 or above will
not affect engine reliability.
Volvo engines are designed to achieve rated
horsepower, torque, and fuel economy performance
using premium 91 octane fuel. In
demanding conditions, such as operating the
vehicle in hot weather, towing a trailer, or driving
for extended periods at higher altitudes
than normal, it may be advisable to switch to
higher octane fuel (91 or higher) or to change
gasoline brands to fully utilize your engines
capacity, and for the smoothest possible operation.
Warranty Manual states:
May switch around to see if it fuel economy.
Crap! There is not a single XC60 in the configuration I want in the whole region. Thus, a custom order would have to be made with a delivery date of Sept.
However, they have a demo with <5000 miles that's loaded that they would be willing to sell me. http://www.bostonvolvo.com/mvc/inve...pe/Sport+Utility/year_low/2011/year_high/2011
Will go by tomorrow for a test drive.
Hey I bought parts from Boston Volvo. Well it was a small stockpile of oil filters, washers, and o-rings. Great guys in the parts department.
adding a turbo to an engine is much like adding variable valve timing. more stuff to break, but in a well-designed setup not likely to cause an engine to be any less reliable.
both of those things are very sensitive to dirty oil, though. moving parts in VVT setups get stuck and oil passages get clogged. for turbos, the crud can cause wear to the bearings inside the turbo (leading to oil going down the intake or out the exhaust), and sludge can eventually plug the oil lines going to it. coolant is notsomuch a worry as long as it's present.
the new T5's and T6's seem like pretty good motors. they've been refined over a long period (volvo has made multiple 4, 5, and 6 cylinder versions of what is internally a very similar design since the early 90's). old T5's are likewise pretty decent. it's only the old 6's that i would avoid like the plague- more for trans issues than anything turbo-related.
Is that the one with the 4T65-E transmission?
135K on the odometer?
Flip it quick and make sure you stress to the buyer "as-is" condition.
At that mileage it might already be on it's second transmission already.
To top it off, my wife has been driving it lately and really likes it. ugh..
