Are WD drives really all that noisy?

The only thing noisier on my new gaming rig compared to the older one is the CPU fan. The raptor is said to be louder but I haven't noticed.

The new ones with the flulid bearings are a lot more quiet than the previous ball bearing ones. They're still louder than the famous Seagate drives.

If you want quiet, Samsung drives are the way to go. Their Spin-somethingIcan'tremeber drives are *extremely* quiet. But not as well performuing as the Seagates. WD drives are noiser than I would like, b ut their new fluid bearings make them quiet*er*.

Yes, they are very noisy if you're unlucky and get the infamous "WD whine" :|

I know mine is the loudest thing in my computer, hands down. Of course, I do have quiet components... you might not notice it if your computer isn't quiet.

The only WD drive that was moisy to me was the 36Gb Raptor. The 74Gb version was barely audible along with any of the 7200RPM's I owned.

Every now and then the whine pops up, but very rarely. Restarting the computer makes it go away.

My 74 gb was noisy at first but i moved it to another bay and it became much quieter. Probably has something to do with acoustics and vibration, etc. at different positions in the case.

I have the 36 gb raptor and it isn't any louder than my other 7200 rpm maxtors were.

I have an old-ish 800JB (2yr) and a Maxtor (1yr)
One of them is very noisy, not sure which. Especially under a virus scan.

That being said, my WD 160 SATA is almost silent.

When I bought that drive 2 years ago it was said to be the most quiet drive out on the market.

I've had both the SeaGate and WD drives, and I can't really tell the difference. With my case and CPU fan, and my PSU going, I never hear any HD activity. I would guesstimate the overall db of my system is between 36db and 40db, which is probably average (it wasn't built to be completely silent or anything), so the HD is probably under 29db.

i have 6 samsung, the only quiet thing about it is when you access the hd
but idle it can get noisy after a year of usage..
WD are not noisy during idle but they do make a little chatter noise during access
No big deal!

Seagate vs WD. Seagate runs like crap. No, not like crap but slow. Samsung may be close to silent but THOSE RUN LIKE CRAP. That's why I would get a Seagate because they're not only reliable, but decent in speed.
