Are we humans just a parasite?

so, we classify everything else on earth, parasite, etc... but we dont define ourselves... If we look at ourselves, we are no different than a parasite. Live on its host until the resources are depleted, and then you either die off, or you determine a way to move on to another host... we have basically given up trying to figure out how to move on to another host, so we are destined to be a failed parasite.

I wouldn't say parasite, but a part of a larger living orginism, if you view the earth as a single entity.

earth isn't an animal. so no.
every animal lives on a host resource until it depletes. they are only kept in check by other things eating them.

That would be a symbiotic relationship. A parasite takes without giving. I think humans are closer to parasites.

We do?

it is to late for me to start naming off different classifications, sleep is more important...

also, what if the earth is no different than a blood cell, do you consider a blood cell a living animal? because, im pretty sure you would be pissed if little bastards were on your blood cells slowly killing each one... if they can figure out how to get off that cell

erm lets not get pointless. you might as well call a chemical reaction parasitic if all the reagents are used up

In one sense perhaps, but that is such an incomplete abstraction of our role that it would be meaningless to draw any conclusions from it. I consider humanity as an evolution of this world, capable of reversing local entropy on a massive scale, and also capable of assigning meaning to it. what comes out of it remains to be seen, but I'm rather optimistic and think humanity can learn and evolve.

But the Earth is different than a blood cell. Way freaking different.

Hello, Agent Smith.

I was thinking exactly this.

I like to think of humans as the individual components of a larger, more complex organism behaving as a parasite. On the individial level, we may seem fairly inocuous, many of us even doing more good for the world than bad. But like a huge worldcarver, as a total population we are sucking every resource from the planet and converting them to unnatural forms.

Blame evolution, not the human.

The reason why humanity doesn't come to an equilibrium with our environment (as Smith puts it) is because we are constantly finding new ways to increase the resources available to us. Bacteria use up all the resources around them and then move on or die. We use up resources, then invent new ways of creating more. The two situations aren't really comparable.
