Yes, you get the quarter back here as well. I don't mind giving it up to help out someone heading in while I am leaving. If those quarters ever come between me and food and shelter, I am fucked far worse than those handful of quarters I gave away would ever help out with anyways.
A pound is a decent amount because even if people go "ah, F it, I'll leave the trolley it's raining" there'll be someone who goes "ooh free pound coin!" and returns it pretty quickly!

I use cash for everything, but I keep a quarter in my wallet for aldi in case I'm out of pocket quarters.
We call them the Aldi quarters. I dig their store model. Exchanging a little extra labor for significant savings works for me. Publix will vacuum your wallet clean like in a cartoon if you don't stick to buy one get one free aka BOGO items and sale ads. It is expensive because they will bag for you, and even take everything to the car and put it in. Full service like the old days. You don't have to tip them, store policy is not to. While I ain't turning this into a tipping thread, I would tip if they brought my stuff to the car. I see them grab carts on the way back so @ksheets is not being a douche bag by not returning them there, It really is part of the service that sets them apart.

I love Aldi with the possible exception of their fresh fruit just which doesn't seem to stay fresh as long for some reason. (particularly apples... S&S lasts literally TWICE as long before getting mushy)

OTOH I dropped by Stop & shop earlier today and somehow managed to drop $61 on two smallish bags of assorted stuff.... good lord!

That is brilliant. Instead of wasting an employee/payroll on the tasks, customers do the work for someone else's pound.

There is a set of common decency behavioral norms that should be adhered to and shame heaped upon those who do not (unless they are literally disabled).

In this vein my brain when I see somebody litter:

You oughta hear me when I'm on a hiking trail and someone has thoughtfully bagged up their dog's turd and then gone and LEFT THE FUCKING BAG ON THE TRAIL 🤬
I usually pick up trail litter, but rarely do I stoop to hauling some fucking asshole's dog's turd with me.

Okay bear with me. I have done this to avoid carrying it with me and having it smell up the duration of my hike. My dog almost always goes within like five minutes on the trail. I’ll hide it behind some tree in a nook so it won’t bother people and grab it on the way out. Hopefully these degenerates of yours are doing the same thing.

In Denmark most carts require you unlock it with a coin of 10 or 20 DKK, to make sure you return the cart.

No, I take the cart home with me. I have about 3000 of them now. I don't know what to do with them, as there's a mountain of them in my yard and my house is full of shopping carts.
Custom charcoal grill. You'll be rich.

The homeless behind walmart caught the woods on fire. They were using the cart to grill their steaks on.

No, I'm talking about people who just leave it RIGHT THERE on the side of the trail. Seen them persist over multiple days sometimes too, so some of these people definitely aren't grabbing it on their way back.

Some of the bigger supermarkets in towns and cities in the UK have weird little grids on all the exits from the car parks that make the trolley wheels lock up so you can't push the trolleys off the premises.

I used to like when carts made their way to the other end of the parking lot when I worked as a cart pusher/bagger at age 15. Game me an excuse to get out of the store and take a slow walk to go get them.

I return them now because I’m not deranged
One of my favorite things to do as a cashier in HS: finding excuses to take walks in the store. Stocking or leveling shelves and asked if we have something, take a walk to the back room knowing nothing is back there...

I don't care if it's 110 degrees, what the fuck makes me so special that someone should have to come clean up after me?

- As far as carts, I'll return the cart unless its one of those vast expanse parking lots with no return stalls. In that case i'll "curb" the cart by putting its front wheels over something that prevents it from rolling (like a planter or curb stop) and consider my duty done.

The store has to meet me half-way here, give me some reasonable locations to return the cart, don't make me do the work you won't pay some kid $8 an hour to do.

If I really wanted to justify myself, I personally don't mind finding a cart in the middle of the parking lot (so long as its curbed/secured in some way and not just rolling around) which I can grab and walk into the store with.

- Yeah, why not just leave the biodegradable shit on the ground. Why put it into a plastic bag and leave it which will actually litter the environment more!

Yeah, I was wondering if the thread was about the carts I sometimes find left in front of my house. I call the store (it's about 1/3 mile away) and they pick them up.

Yes, I regard litterers as worse examples of humanity than people who do not leave their shopping carts at designated locations.

always take the cart back and I think it's uncivilized not to.

in fact I think at Costco parking lots, if you don't return your cart, a Costco employee can ram said cart into your car exactly one time with a 100ft head start.

If everyone returned their carts, there would be no need for those 'cart train' locomotives - see above.

Not only does it provide low wage employment opportunities but it's the basis for an entire industry.

Where's your capitalist spirit you commies.
