My fave market moved to what was (at a time long ago) an abandoned air field and NATO missile base (seriously). I sorta miss not having those nukes nearby. But this area has marginal radon levels, so, kinda the same thing.

Anyway, the mall there has be largely abandoned for decades. I don't understand why except to say that apparently, location isn't everything.

Aside from the stores, it just this horizon to horizon expanse of asphalt. I'm sorta exaggerating but it really is huge.

You would think that these days, they'd at least plant some trees, but nooooo. As a result I don't like going there during daylight hours and at this time of year, that's an issue.

I usually return the cart to the nearest coral or inside the store, but I kind of get it if some people with kids don't. The stores usually have staff for that sort of thing anyway, keeps them employed.
I've got good news!

Having actually pulled a few shifts on "cart duty" once upon a time - stores usually only have one person doing it, who's got a bunch of other stuff to do too. And staffing tends to be predicated on the assumption that customers are, for the most part, doing their part. So you can return your cart to the designated area with a clear conscience - there is virtually zero possibility that your doing so will contribute to the employee losing their job.

But it certainly makes their shitty job marginally easier, ensures that more carts are reliably available for customers, and increases the likelihood that the employee will be available to quickly respond to carryout requests from customers who need help loading their cars.

Interesting observation; at Target, the "cart guy" is also the "help, somebody blew up the toilet" guy. Poor bastard.

One of my favorite things to do as a cashier in HS: finding excuses to take walks in the store. Stocking or leveling shelves and asked if we have something, take a walk to the back room knowing nothing is back there...
Classic early 2000s coming of age story

A few years ago, our local Costco which has acres of parking and asphalt, cut down ALL of their trees on the little curb islands. Reason was there were so many birds shitting on cars and the cart corrals that they had to take them out. It looks just like a mall parking lot now.

If the birds could be trained to just shit on the cars for the assholes that Don't bother to return their carts this could be a win-win

Usually, but about the only time I get a cart is at Costco. At other stores I take a carry hand basket and load my backpack at checkout.

At Costco I always look for an abandoned cart if I can find one before I go to a cart train. I almost always take a cart up to the front of the store instead of veering off to the cart trains there. I have left some Costco carts next to my parking space, figure someone else will do the same as me and just take it. All in all saves people walking to a cart train.

Why are you guys so self-righteous? Repressing the guilt about driving pollution machines that are stoking global warming??? When I can, I shop with my bicycle, but that's for stores other than Costco. It's pretty much only Costco I drive to.

It's not reasonable to expect everyone to shop at Costco on a bike. People go there to buy in bulk. Have you seen people at the checkout lanes or loading their cars?

With the added bonus that Costco can and will ban customers who piss them off.

Do not piss off the Costco employees.

I bet the same people never rewound the VHS tape from the rent shop or library.
IIRC they threatened to charge you if you didn't. At least that's what my parents told us growing up so we always made sure we did immediately after watching the tape lol

There was a rewind fee if you didn't rewind before returning.

I remember when they came out with the VCRs that would auto rewind once the tape gets to the end, that was like the coolest thing at the time, this is before we got access to the information super highway through the phone line. It was fun to let it play to the end just to watch it happen. "Oh! Watch! It's going to rewind on it's own!".

You get a rewinder just to spare your VCR from wear and tear. Also, you can watch the next tape right away. Very important for tv shows.

Oh yeah I remember those, we didn't have one. I recall it looking like a race car or something, I knew people that did have one.

Kinyo was a huge brand for VCR rewinder. I think we had 2 in service at all times. Not a big deal since we sold them.
