Are you a cart returner?

Read an article in USA today about a woman who went viral justifying why she doesn't return carts. She basically said it was for safety because she doesn't want to leave her kids alone while returning the cart. Seems reasonable I guess, but if I was that concerned, I would walk the cart back with the kid(s) before putting them in the car. This would encourage the kid(s) to learn to put the cart back in the future when they grow up I'm assuming. The article said there was a study about the type of person you are based on whether or not you returned the cart. Stupid study, but didn't realize this was a somewhat highly debated subject.

Link to article: https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/2024/06/05/leslie-dobson-shopping-cart-return/73987501007/

Anyways, I'm in the return cart band. What say you?

Always. For places that don't have cart return areas in the parking lots (eg, Tractor Supply, Pet Supplies Plus), I bring them back into the store. I guess I could understand a situation like above if someone had to shop with kids in tow that it might be a safety concern, but most times I see people not returning them they just can't be bothered to do it.

Every time. She's a spoiled brat and is going to raise her kids the same. Hope she doesn't have any more.

She could take the kids to the cart return instead of leaving them in the car.

edit: what the OP said.

When we arrive I grab carts between the car and cart corral and return all but one, which I use. Afterwards, I return my cart and any others once again.

This for me. I almost 100% park pretty far from the entrances to stay away from other vehicles and still take them back into the store if a stall isn't around. Lazy heathens the lot of them.

I used to like when carts made their way to the other end of the parking lot when I worked as a cart pusher/bagger at age 15. Game me an excuse to get out of the store and take a slow walk to go get them.

I return them now because I’m not deranged

So you arrive to the parking lot, collect carts on your way into the store to return all of them but the one you're going to use?

I’m surprised anyone readily admits to being the level of lazy entitled slob that it would take to not walk the cart back. It’s not just creating work for others because of your own laziness, it’s risking damaging other peoples’ property and making parking lots more unpleasant and difficult to navigate for everyone.

To me it’s the same type of person who will casually ding your door opening theirs and think nothing of it.

I didn't when it was fuck-you cold (below about 10º Freedom degrees) in the Midwest, other than that, yeah.
The kids argument, eh, I suppose it depends on how many of them you're wrangling, if you've only got one or two, you should probably be able to manage to return your cart. If it's 3+ shit gets harder--but by that point maybe you have a kid big enough to return the cart for you while you're dealing with the other kids. Also, don't have more than 2 kids, turns out the sheer amount of hassle doesn't follow a linear scale based on number of children.

Correct.

Aldi has it right with the quarter for a cart. Never ceases to amaze me how many will take your cart when you are done loading to avoid paying a quarter of one single dollar (for those of you not certain how much a quarter is here) And return their own cart to get it back. I rarely see any carts in their parking lot.

There is a set of common decency behavioral norms that should be adhered to and shame heaped upon those who do not (unless they are literally disabled).

In this vein my brain when I see somebody litter:

I forgot some places require a quarter. The last store I remember seeing this was Smart & Final and they stopped years doing it years ago IIRC.

Costs a quid here (that's about $1.30) but you get it back. Most places use a pound coin as a deposit, apart from Waitrose but well.. Waitrose!
It's a bit of a pain as I never have coins any more but there's those charity tokens that cost a quid and are exactly the same size as a quid that clip to your keys.

Yes, you get the quarter back here as well. I don't mind giving it up to help out someone heading in while I am leaving. If those quarters ever come between me and food and shelter, I am fucked far worse than those handful of quarters I gave away would ever help out with anyways.

Always return my cart, although I must confess it goes in the nearest "corral" not back inside unless I'm parked right near the door.
