I wonder how many were Only Children or The Oldest Child with a large gap between them and their first Sibling?

I am the second child out of four with a distance of +1, -3, -7, and I would consider myself a loner. I'm not sure if it matters much, because the busy household made me want to stay up at night so I would get some peace. It was always so calming at night.

Doing the online dating thing, I see people with profiles saying things about how close they are to their family, or I'll see it out in the world. It makes me feel a bit awkward and wondering if I'm odd. ...or perhaps wondering about it makes me odd?

I'd say yes, I have friends I talk to and stuff but none are really the "go out" type or can't due to other commitments. Most of my closer friends from high school are now married with kids, too, so days of "hanging out" are over. I would not want to go back to school years, but at same time I do miss the hanging out aspect of it. Funny thing is now that I have my own place it would be so much better for entertaining, but everyone has moved on.

I don't feel lonely though, I've never been that big of a social person, and I actually don't really like parties and stuff like that. My idea of hanging out is inviting a friend over and just watching a movie, playing video games or something like that. No loud party/drinking stuff. I do need to make a bigger effort to try to hang out more with friends though.

The poll result is bit.. disheartening to me. I mean, I didn't expect better in a tech forum, but 85%?

This forum is just a big circle jerk of hating people.

you do realize that you can be a loner and not hate everyone

I'm pretty much a loner. I rather spend my time on the weekends by myself than in the company of friends. It's just how I've always been. I socialize quite a bit at work and after hours, but once the weekend rolls around, that's alone time for me.

I'm very much an introvert, but not completely a loner. I prefer solitude sometimes, but, I'm cool with me girlfriend moving into my place, I have my home office, we're setting up a "craft room" for her so we each have our own space...

I feel like a loner, but its because I am at an age where all of my college friends are married and have kids.

I do have a few friends from high school, but I have problems hanging out with them or doing anything that requires money since most of them are at crappy jobs.

I'm a "loner", partially by choice because I find most people annoying. However sometimes I feel a bit sad.. Especially during weekends when I'm alone in my apartment while everyone else does whatever it is people do in the weekends.

We have fun with other people, and there's the sex part too.

Ah, I see I'm not the only one who uses this sort of expression.

This is kind of sad that so few people here have learned how to enjoy other people.

People are wired different. You enjoy the company of other people. I find it highly stressful and sometimes annoying. I've tried for close to 20 years to be social it just doesn't suit me. I enjoy spending time with my wife and my dog. That's enough for me.

I enjoy the company of like-minded people.

These days society is rather fractured with 150 different cable channels and all these distantly separated cliques online. Everyone has their own indie personal taste in music and their own little show they like to watch and their own little websites they like to visit. Its not like in the past where people basically watched the same 5-10 channels, listened to the same 5-10 radio stations, and it was easy to relate to almost anyone.

I have friends who party party and bang random girls. Thats just not my scene. I try to befriend anyone I see who I think is similar enough to me.

Sports is probably the best community to be in I've been getting into that just to have common ground with people and hangout. Common ground is what matters most. Its not just us, even the extroverts are getting more fractured in community.

Make friends with people you like, simple as that.
