Surströmming for the not so faint at heart.

"Because of the strong smell, surströmming is ordinarily eaten outdoors. The pressurized can is usually opened some distance away from the dining table, and is often initially punctured while immersed in a bucket of water, or after tapping and angling it upwards at 45 degrees, to prevent the escaping gas from spraying any brine. This prevents brine from getting onto clothes and gets rid of most of the initial foul smell. "

More about it here.

Those are usually warnings I associate with things that I would have no intention of eating. That remains true with the above.

Fermented food is acquired taste. I haven't developed taste for fermented skate yet but I've come to love fermented raw crab. Same with fermented raw cod fish eggs and fermented raw oysters.

My daughter won't eat pickles yet she'll eat kimchi.

The ONLY two things I will not put in my mouth is durian tried a couple time and very hot(spicy) food. There are also things that I don't care for but I can tolerate them like pickle anything because of vinegar, organs, inserts, heavily buttered meal like the old French or Eng meal.

I'm lactose-intolerant plus really don't like most cheese however I'd chow down if that was all there was to eat.

Aside from that, set a plate of calf-brain or bull-penis in front of me chances are it'll go back to the kitchen untouched.

Ns1 technically didn't eat bull penis. He spat it out like a girl. So that doesn't count. He can't even handle canned oysters. How is he going to handle fermented spicy oysters when he can't even handle canned stuff?

oh man, the gauntlet has been tossed, @Ns1

too bad he never comes around here anymore.

Half the picky waters you can't even get them to eat green vegetables let alone anything fermented.

Truth.
<---- proves the rule without exception

Though I will add a caveat, I love all most things which underwent fermentation to produce alcohol. And breads... Hardest thing about low carb diets for me is that I love all the breads.

But seriously, a dislike of some or most greens -- and vegetables in general -- is the most common form of picky eating, and a significant proportion of that cohort likely have over-sensitive taste receptors or a type not present for others, at least those tuned to certain molecules. But oddly enough, vegetable picky eaters can just be really weird and like some of the strangest foods or even those that relatively un-picky eaters may not even like. I'm kind of that way - I mean, I'd probably *try* it but smell for me is a hard thing to overcome.

I've grown to love crab and lobster, even though all throughout my life, including to this day, I can hardly stand the smell of them cooking. I can't stand the fishy smell, don't like most seafood, but I'm finding seafood that doesn't have a strong fishy taste and trying to increase my seafood intake. And I do try to incorporate vegetables of which I am not particularly fond into some of my recipes so that I can get some veges, even if still quite rare.

And that's probably going to shorten my life - which sucks. I would like to stave off cancer for sure, that's likely the greatest risk in my eyes, at least if you otherwise get your basic nutritional needs via diet, vitamins, and supplements.
