And then you kept reading down below on that page, right?

"For apples-to-apples testing we played at 2560x1600 with 2X AA enabled with "Ultra" settings to push graphics. [...] The HD 7970 is 16% faster than the Galaxy MDT GTX 580 at these settings. Similar to the last game, 16% doesn't sound like a lot, but this setting was not playable on the overclocked Galaxy MDT GTX 580, and it was playable on the HD 7970, and then some."

Heh. Just saw all the same responses.

16%...sweet!

I spend lots of money on hardware to play with, and I really don't care who makes it. I will be on the 28nm bandwagon, but not with the 7970 as it stands. 2 7950s or whatever nV brings to the table will probably be what I am looking at.

This happens so frequently with [H], I wonder if its a good idea for them to even test highest playable settings. I'm guilty of it too, I skim through a lot of hardware reviews and barely look at the charts.

also: overclocked vs overclocked

I wouldn't call a 25 fps increase trivial

I don't see how 24 mins, or even 27 mins are considered playable.

However it's clearly a good 15% faster in the avg, and 12.5%~ faster on min.

That said you're paying for slightly more performance in a game that would require SLI/CF anyways and at that point unless you had a 25x16 120Hz screen it's not going to matter.

The 7970 isn't a $550 card, unless Nvidia drops the ball totally I think we can expect more than a 10 to 15 percent increase in performance with the 780 over the 580 (considering AMD had to cut shaders for their new design while Nvidia is just perfecting Fermi) or alternatively Nvidia drops the 780 at $700+.

Wait a minute,it's not important that a 500 dollar video card be tested on Ultra Pre-sets.

1gb cards were called useless in these forums, because of that setting. Now we want to flip-flop and not use it on a flagship card ?

Its not flip-flop unless:
1. The same person changes his/her viewpoint. The forums have different people with different opinions.
2. They repeatedly change between 2 viewpoints depending on which one favors their current political candidate (or in this context, GPU maker).

Here we go again. Another thread crap turned into muck by trolling. This is a yes or no question thread.

Uhh...the "Yes or no" in answered in the poll. So are you saying we should only be saying "yes" or "no" in our replies as well?

One could logcially deduce that the comments section of the poll would be to discuss why we are or are not buying one on the 9th.

I didn't make this thread so Nvidia fanboys can make excuses why their video cards are now obsolete and overpriced. I made this thread as a shrine for amd fanboys to get off on the new cards.

I like the 580 but it is now a horrible buy at 500 dollars. At 450 it wouldn't be bad and 400 it would be decent but whats the point in buying old technology?

Not to mention it's also translating to the minimum FPS department, which is a big deal when it comes to perceived smoothness.

No thanks. It barely beats the 580 in the game I am spending most of my time playing. (BF3)

So, this is your reason for not buying the 7970?

Of course we are having a discussion as well as the poll vote. If you owned a 580, I would understand if you said you were standing pat because it wasn't enough of an upgrade. Or, if you said you were going to buy a 580 instead (Not that many would agree with that choice. ). You just threw that comment out there though, with a bogus comparison that I guess you hoped nobody would call you on (I assume you've been around long enough to read benchmarks?). That is why people are calling you out. It's not because you have no right to your opinion in the discussion.

Local retailer is taking pre-orders for the Sapphire 7970 for $620. I'd rather wait for midrange cards that are better priceerformance ratio, plus have to see what nvidia has in the 600 series. In no rush at all with current setup that destroys everything. I got time to see how things play out in the next few months

You do realize it's not apples to apples? This is apples to apples.

ps. that GTX580 is factory overclocked (860MHz/1000MHz) so its GPU clock is more than 10% over reference.
Note that's also a 16% faster than an 11% factory overclocked card. Even if you took the GTX 580 to 1GHz (which few can do on air), it wouldn't overcome that deficit against a stock 7970. I've seen it repeated on the forums that the 7970 isn't much faster in BF3 - if this is a "worst case scenario" for the 7970, I think it shows what a monster this card is.

Good news boys, MSI afterburner with beta support for 7970 voltage tweaking is here. Previously the only way to alter voltage was in the BIOS.

http://downloads.guru3d.com/MSI-Afterburner-2.2.0-Beta-10-download-2839.html

let the 7970 overclocking madness (with voltage tweaking) begin
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Already downloaded it.

I'd love to grab a 7970 day 1 if it was at least 25-50% faster than one of my 580s before overclocking. Unfortunately its only 5-30% faster before overclocking. I really want to move away from dual GPU solutions, but the 7970 isn't fast enough. Its fast enough that if you do go dual GPU (or more) it is extremely fast and will smoke all these games (ie Metro 2033, Witcher 2, Crysis, etc) that still give the likes of a dual GTX580 setup more than it can bargain for.

With overclocking the 7970 can barely scrape at the heals of a 6990, which simply isn't fast enough when I'm barely happy with my 2 x GTX580s.

Granted, I might just have to resign myself to the fact that I'm never going to be satisfied by single GPU performance again, but I'm not exactly enthusiastic about dropping over a grand for at least two 7970s.

It's interesting to me to see how many 6950/6970 users are now spending over $550 for a single card, I wonder why they don't have a 580 which was out before the slower 6970 appeared.

As bunny said, it's just not fast enough. It would be slower than what I have, and I push my cards to the brink in many games. The 780 probably won't be either, because I'm spoiled now by low cost higher performance multi gpu setups.
