How do you like that RAM btw? I picked up a kit when I swapped out my board, I read a few reviews that didn't seem that great but it seems they are solid for 8GB DIMMs. For $110+tax seemed a pretty good deal on 2x8GB. Not sure if I will use the Elite or use the 4x4GB Samsung 30nm low-profile low-voltage sticks I have.
Definitely no complaints. They passed memtest86+ just fine at 1866 - 9-9-9-27 1T @ 1.5V, which is better than quite a few of the kits being sold on newEgg.

Will try getting it up to 2000 or 2133 later tonight with loosened timings (for curiosity's sake)

I was almost going to do that until I saw that Haswell is kind of a b*tch in regards to simultaneously achieving high core and IMC clocks. Made do with a nice 1866 CL9 Crucial Ballistix Elite kit instead.

Ah. I hadn't heard about that! Although, I'm one of those weird nerds that doesn't really overclock unless it's as simple as XMP. I've always preferred quietness over speed, which is why this might become my first full water-cooled system! My 680 is much quieter than my 6950 was, but I wouldn't mind it being a bit quieter, and I can accomplish that with water cooling.

So, at worst, if I need to dial back the memory speed, I either choose a different profile (if it has more than just default and XMP 1.3) or manually clock it.

Country, Batch #?

The two MALAY - L307B239s that I got will only do 4.4GHz 100-pass IBT stable with 1.2V, which according to ASUS, means that they're dogs

Very neat. It's basically a mini Sabertooth.

reason why I ask this is because I'm thinking of the i7 with that board, inside a Silverstone FT03 case.

Malaysia - L312B318

I think I have decided on an Asus Z87 Plus for the motherboard.

Well, bought an 4770k and gets here tomorrow. Can't decide on a mobo though, thinking Asus z87-deluxe, but dunno yet. Whatever it is it better not have a damn marvell raid controller, that drove me nuts on my current gigabyte model. Tired of compromising, going high end this time. Realized today that I really just need a mobo, everything else I've got will transfer over. Heck, might not even have to redo my raid setup..although I ultimately will.

That's a good board, just be sure you're going to use all the features of the Deluxe before dropping that much money on a board. Typically ASUS's models under the Deluxe are more or less the same board, just omitting some features that you may not even use anyway. Don't just buy it because it's the most expensive one.

The issue for me are the desktop variants. I can get by on an intel atom lappy but I have no use for IGP on a desktop. What I want in a CPU upgrade is a lot more per core and top quality thermal dissipation which in my eyes just isn't what Haswell or Intel's entire 22nm lineup has turned out to be.

Not bad chips but definitely not appealing to someone who sat on a Athlon XP for ten years. Suddenly one day I couldn't even play youtube videos in high quality, only to have my mind blown when I found out there were Quad core CPU's at three times the clock speed. Blow my mind Intel, BLOW ME.

Nah, from what I know the typical OC range is 4.3-4.6 while most stop at around 4.5GHz. HW really needs to be de-lidded.

They make CPUs for people like you and me...it's called the "-E" series.

In September, I get Ivy Bridge E 6C/12T and I will love it.

I want more cpu power but Haswell is a joke of an upgrade for me since I only care about gaming. I need way more ipc and the ability to oc much higher without hitting ridiculous temps to justify an upgrade of a mobo and cpu.

I just upgraded from a Gigabyte Z68 MB with an Intel 2500k CPU to a Gigabyte Z87 MB with an Intel i5-4670k CPU. While at it I found a good deal on ram and bought 16GB of 1866 DDR3 with low latency. After selling off my old stuff the upgrade cost me about $200 USD.
Not expecting any major changes, just an incremental upgrade.

No upgrade this time for dad even though i planned it.

Frankly i didnt bother searching what fitted in my node 304 case, cooler, mb, for something that was about the same. I had hoped for better efficieny. I just cant find the motivation this time

But new tech should always be tried out - lol, so boy gets a haswell. I will try the S model this time.

what was the point? you just went from one quad to another quad that only has about 10-12% ipc difference and overclocks worse. IMO you accomplished nothing with your "incremental upgrade".

True, one reason is for the 802.11ac included which may help me when moving into a new townhouse that I will not have the opportunity to change the wiring.

Really waiting on some reviews. Anyone know where I can go? Thinking anand won't have one for awhile.

Considering that the currently-marketed "wireless AC" is in fact pre-standard, I would hesitate committing to that on a mobo, because it might prove useless in six months. Unless it's on a removable mini-PCI card that can be replaced. In that case it's all good.

I just overclocked my 2600k from 4.0ghz to 4.4ghz. Figure a little power increase is a heck of a lot cheaper than a new cpu and motherboard purchase.

I was thinking maybe... But now I don't even want to get Haswell.

Marketing is getting in the way of progress.

I am interested in buying it. Microcenter's mobo combo is pretty nice so I MAY pick it up in the near future. The biggest question in my mind is whether a 4770K will be a better performer for my general computer use (movies, usual browsing, games, folding) than my current FX-8320.
