I bought my i7-4770K today. Still looking at the motherboards and trying to decide which one to get though...

I'm glad that you've been able to decide on one thing at least! I'm still bouncing around non-K vs. K, and then I have to decide whether I want a board with less features vs. a board with more features that I probably won't use anyway. The ASRock Extreme6 is on sale at Newegg for $20 off, which brings it close to the Extreme4's price, but it isn't a part of a very good combo deal. The only negative is that my assumption is that the extras (+2 SATA6, +1 Gbit LAN, +1 mPCI-E) are all going to mess with the available PCI-E lanes.

If MC isn't too far for you, you should go back and get ~$35 back. The Asrock Extreme4 dropped to $115 in today's ad.

http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/6a81b268#/6a81b268/33

Even better yet, if you are subscribed to MC's email there's the ad today that has the Gigabyte Z87x UD4 for $160. With the $280 +$40 off combo, you can get both for $400 for a much better board. I picked up the 4770K + Extreme4 for $400 yesterday, but swapped the board today for the UD4 at the same price, but this is somewhat YMMV because you need the ad and also need them to honor the price.

The main draw of the Gigabyte UD4 is much better PCIe lane configuration, as it's x8/x8 (3.0) + x4 (2.0). All of the Asrock Z87 Extreme line from what I saw only do x8/x4/x4 (3.0) with all PCIe x16 slots populated. More important if you run SLI. There's also a lot more 4-pin fan headers on the UD4 and just general better board quality/components.

I got the Asus Mobo and 4770k today. Decided against the MSI after reading the review for the previous socket board. Looked bad.

Which Asus exactly? And, since I'm asking, why did you choose that board versus the other Asus boards?

Because it was on sale
Z87-A (SLI) LGA 1150 ATX
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...spx?sku=614826

It was pretty, it was better than the MSI board they had on sale as well which has ZERO reviews anywhere on the world wide web (how is that possible...), and the previous iteration just had a number of problems that I just didn't feel like risking. Felt the 50 dollar premium was worth it, especially when the combo came out to 390 dollars before taxes.

At the price it should be at $350 for the 4770k and $150 for the board on newegg and amazon, I felt I was getting a steal on both.

The review for the Asus Board inspired confidence, and I felt the resale for the board would be better than the MSI board. Also MicroCenter didn't have many boards when I went there. Their store is a mess.

I don't know much about mobos though so I'm probably the WORST person to talk to haha. You know more about what I chose probably than I do.

I still don't own DDR3 ram, a Case, A PSU, or a HD (I got spares of HDs though) yet. I have a video card picked out but I need to order that.

Sure.... I'll be picking up these suckers in bulk once they release a $120 Core i3 variant a few months from now.

Anyone crazy enough to spend $450 on a CPU either has money to burn or hasn't had the opportunity to see their top of the line $2,000 gaming rig get outperformed by a $900 gaming rig a year later.

Depending on how things go with my new job, I may end up with Haswell in a gaming lappy, but apart from gaming, I'm in no particular rush to replace my i5-460M + Radeon 5470 machine. Not doing anything particularly heavy without stable internet anyway, so yeah.

$280 wasn't bad, considering I'll keep it for quite a while and CPU advances don't happen that much, and my last desktop was 2005? (maybe earlier I'm thinking 2003-4), I think it's ok.

You did good. [ H ]ardOCP clocked their golden 4770K fairly high on this board. :awe:

Ya. When I saw their review on the MSI socket 1155 board, which I think the 1150 is similar too (I just thought I don't really know), I just lost confidence in it. I know they got engineering samples of the 4770k, but I was impressed with the features of the board, and felt better knowing I was getting a board without a large amount of odditities compared to a completely unknown/reviewed board. The Socket 1155 of the MSI had weird boot things with the keyboard/mouse/USB and I have that now with my current mobo and it is annoying as hell. The LAST thing any person wants to do is unplug their mouse, keyboard, etc. just to ATTEMPT to boot into windows, and then have to plug it all back in.

It's just sitting though in a pile of hardware things I bought. I'm picking a case out now though. DS1, DS2, Design Define R4, and 500D. Right now, the Fractal Design is winning, because it's the only one in stock with all my needs haha. I wish I could find the DS1 and DS2. Really impressed with those cases.

2500K is still fine, even on the old bugged 1st gen SB motherboards, Too much of a pain for my custom WC and block to go back on undo it. SATA on 3rd party chips 4tw!

I am waiting on steambulldozavator to see if it may be good.

I'm waiting for the new Macbooks to replace my core2duo macbook pro. I think it's about time. I'm not even sure how I dented my Macbook so much but I guess grad school really took a toll on it.

It just sucks I told myself to skip SB and wait for Ivy and once again for Haswell, but the increases are less and less. Seems like I wouldn't have lost much just getting a SB Macbook back then. Oh well? I guess what'd piss me off is if the next 2-3 years sees massive improvements in IPC. Hah.

It's been getting far easier to wait out upgrades for me. Don't know if I'm just getting old or it's the lackluster increases in performance. I feel like I can wait a couple years from now with my 2500k and 7970 before I will need to upgrade. The new consoles may change that rather quickly for the 2500k though depending on how highly threaded the games are.

Either way, I can wait for a while before I have to decide.

You'd have missed out on quite a bit of GPU performance as well as battery life. I'm on a 2010 MacBook Air and plan to upgrade to a Haswell equipped MacBook once they're available too. Waiting to see if Apple upgrades the display on the Air, if not, my next laptop will be a 13" Retina BMP.

It's also gotten to a point where most decent gaming systems can run pretty much anything these days.

So I'd say it's a combination of you getting older, not needing anything and that there is no real reason to jump to something new.

I went with a 4770K + ASRock Z77 Extreme4. Unfortunately, the closest Microcenter is in Atlanta (4 hour drive), so I got it off Newegg for a premium. Anyway, like I mentioned before, I figured all of the extra doodads on the Extreme6 such as more SATA ports and another Ethernet port would just increase the POST time, and I'd never use them. I also decided to live on the edge a little bit and get some faster RAM. It probably won't be that useful (unless I start encoding more), but DDR3-2400 (XMP 1.3) does sound like fun. :awe:

what do you guys think of the ASUS gryphon mATX board?
Very neat. It's basically a mini Sabertooth.

I was almost going to do that until I saw that Haswell is kind of a b*tch in regards to simultaneously achieving high core and IMC clocks. Made do with a nice 1866 CL9 Crucial Ballistix Elite kit instead.

What ram do you guys recommend for OCing on this? I need to purchase some. It's the last thing I don't know what I'm getting.

I have no choice but to get Fractal Designs Define R4 since all the other cases I want are out of stock. Once I get memory I'm pretty much done and I can fire this thing up and see how it performs.

How do you like that RAM btw? I picked up a kit when I swapped out my board, I read a few reviews that didn't seem that great but it seems they are solid for 8GB DIMMs. For $110+tax seemed a pretty good deal on 2x8GB. Not sure if I will use the Elite or use the 4x4GB Samsung 30nm low-profile low-voltage sticks I have.
