Impressive. The US is on pace to win >100 medals, evenly split between gold, silver, and bronze.

Right now the US has 31 gold medals.
The Netherlands have 8 gold medals.

We have 17 million people in NL. The USA has 350 million people. That's 20 times more than we have. So to keep this in perspective, the US should get 160 gold medals if they want to be as good as NL.

You close to your 160 gold medals yet ?

Congrats on the 8 gold. Were you guys held back by the rules limiting the total number of contestants per country too?

oh damn, so Locthe might not be FOS after all. The mystery continues.

RIO DE JANEIRO (CBSNewYork/AP) — Two security guards pointed guns at Ryan Lochte and three other swimmers during a dispute at a gas station, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

The change in the version of events came after police interviewed one of the security guards Thursday. It further deepened the mystery of what truly happened at the station and set off an international dispute.

The official said the swimmers broke the bathroom door and the soap dispenser inside. Security footage from inside the station shows the swimmers vandalizing the bathroom.

Workers at the gas station went to see what the commotion was about, the official said. At that point, a security guard also came and confronted the swimmers, and pointed a gun. A second guard came behind him and pointed another gun.

Brazilian police previously said no gun was pointed at the swimmers.

Except that's not the way things work.

But working to absurd principles, Bahamas has a pop of .38 and a gold, which means Netherlands about 38 golds short.

Seems to me that if the suits are going to crawl up their cracks, forcing every player on the team to be constantly prying them out of their butts, then you either make them thongs, or you make them shorts. I've always wondered about why they didn't do the same for divers, vollyeball players, and all the rest who are forced to dig material out of their butts after every performance.

Need pics~ didn't get to watch the water polo match

I'm going to go with the TMZ story

Ryan Lochte and his teammates left out a huge part of their "robbery" story -- which is that they busted up a gas station bathroom, and THEN a security guard pulled a gun on them ... TMZ Sports has learned.

Sources connected to James Feigen tell us the real deal is ... the 4 swimmers -- including Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz -- were on their way home from a party early Sunday morning when they stopped to take a leak at a gas station. We're told one or more of the guys was peeing outside the bathroom, and also kicked in the bathroom door.

Our sources say the swimmers were all wasted.

That's when the gas station's armed security guard rolled up, pulled his gun and demanded they pay for the damage. We're told he did take money from the swimmers, but only to cover the expenses, and then let them go.

Rio police say the gas station manager tells a slightly different story -- claiming the guard never pulled the gun and the manager merely asked them to pay, which they did.

Bottom line ... it's possible Lochte and co. didn't lie about a gun or losing money. However, they DID create a whole bogus scenario about their taxi getting pulled over and fake badges -- and totally omitted the part about them starting the trouble in the first place. On Wednesday night, Lochte repeated most of those lies to Matt Lauer.

They could face prosecution for lying to Rio cops. They have a news conference scheduled for later Thursday.

You only need 1 contestant to win the gold medal. Not a good excuse.

Not Lochte...sorry but he's a Grade-A douchebag. He had a reality show for a while that I saw a couple of times (I was a swimmer growing up so I have an interest in the sport) and the guy is just a major d-bag. I can definitely see them going on a vandalism spree and if had an ounce of sense in his idiot head, he would have kept his mouth shut because the truth will come out sooner or later. How many white kids with green hair are running around Rio right now?
Douchebags confirmed...the swimmers vandalized a gas station, and when they were stopped by security guards, they made up the false story of getting robbed at gunpoint. What a bunch of punks.

Yeah. It sure sounds like those US swimmers were just drunk assholes. Yeah, they handed over money at gunpoint... but that's because they broke down a door for no good reason.

I don't live in the US. I live in Canada and was lamenting the fact we didn't have that many medals. At this point Canada is in 11th place by medal count, with 16 medals. I just hope they can make the top 10. Right now South Korea is in 10th at 17 medals. There is basically no chance either country will make 9th, since that's currently held by Italy at 23 medals.

BTW, The Netherlands has 15 medals, currently in 12th by medal count. Canada has roughly twice the population of The Netherlands.

Medal count doesn't matter.
Only gold matters.

That's not the way it works though. Your flawed logic does nothing to change that fact.

And has already been pointed out to you but you failed to acknowledge because it points up the idiocy of your thinking, that same logic can be applied to ALL nations then. Including irrelevant NL.
So because Brunei, a country with a population of 417,000 or so, has a gold, NL is just frankly a disappointment with only 11** golds. With nearly 40 times the population, you should be on gold number 41 by now!

I'm not sure how old you are, but this is not difficult

**EDIT: Only 8 golds. My mistake. Even more disappointing.

Personally I would rather acknowledge and congratulate all the competitors on their hard work and dedication. Lots of great examples of good sportsmanship but if comparing o-peens is the road you want to go down...

Arguing that you only need 1 contestant to win the gold means population size doesn't matter when compared to medal production per olympian.

Total Netherlands Olympic delegation: 242
Total gold medals: 8
Gold medals per olympian: 0.03
Total medals per olympian: 0.06

Total US Olympic delegation: 554
Total gold medals: 33
Gold medals per olympian: 0.06
Total medals per olympian: 0.17

If you adjusted per competition it would be even more in our favor because we fielded more teams for events like basketball that have have high player counts but only are counted as a single medal.

But not everyone can be an olympic powerhouse like Brunei so I guess we'll have to settle for 2x the gold production and 3x the medal production of NL olympians and being atop the medal count board.

Looks like Ashton Eaton repeats as decathlon gold medalist. I can't even imagine how tough that must be. Now just a bit before we see if Bolt wins handily or if it's close in the 200m.

Good lord I hate NBC's coverage. Great job by Bolt but we have to wait for 9 minutes of fluff commentary before they give a replay

If the US was allowed to enter 20x as many participants in sports we compete head-to-head you might have an argument.

(We don't always send our best, just the athletes that had a good day at qualifying)

Ok, Canada's Damian Warner just got bronze in the decathlon and Andre De Grasse got silver in the 200 m after Bolt.

That puts Canada into the top ten, just barely. I wonder if they can hold that position.

BTW, after those lame traitor comments about the US's Ashton Eaton supporting his Canadian wife by wearing a Canada hat... Brienne Theissen-Eaton took a different tact and wore a shirt supporting both her American husband and his Canadian competitor Damian Warner:
