I ordered a couple of 16 GB WiFi only, I can tether to my phone. Have had the previous 2 versions with 3G, never used it, and WiFi is all over the place in LA, (except the flipping subway )
What??? Link...
If I was getting one, Id get the wifi one. I perfer not to spend extra money on another data plan when I already have a LTE phone to tether.
Not sure about the latter, but do people actually do GPS navigation on a 10" screen? That seems excessive to me.
my friend is going to put one of these in his hot rod as the dash cluster. the true gps will be a nice addition, both for the speedo and navigation.
Yea, but its not like its completely location-ignorant with WiFi location services. If you're just trying to find some quick directions or a nearby coffee shop, I would think WiFi tracking is plenty.
I realize "real" GPS is better, but like I said above...worth $130? I dunno about that.
I've thought about doing something like this, but how would it be setup? Would the device still have a battery, and let sit idle and run on said battery when the car is off, and when the car is on, would it essentially get its battery recharged and run off the car's power? I assume that would be the best setup, but I guess I would prefer it to be like my car's current infotainment setup and just turn off and on every time.
Although, if you took the iPad 2 and mixed it with an iPad 3's battery... you could get some ridiculous idle time.
I would actually like something like it for a GPS though. I've always thought that the "over the shoulder"-ish typical GPS viewpoint just isn't as good as the top down view used by online map viewers (Google Maps, Bing Maps, etc.). I also cannot scroll around the map easily in my car. I have to tap the screen, which brings up arrows and I hit the arrows to move around. When I was trying to find a friend's house, I just put my phone by my gauge cluster and used it rather than my GPS.
im not sure how he is planning on powering it yet, hes working on a seamless dock type of set up right now, but im not sure how he will do that with the port access. he is making it removable, im thinking a port on a hinge type of thing. also, i think for power you could just use an iphone charger with a direct 12V connection. no need to get all fancy for that hehe
i agree on the gps thing, i probably use maps more than the turn-by-turn. i have the dock for mine tho, so i just let it sit there and be a reference.
I keep hearing about "tethering". Not sure exactly what that entails or if it's something that should be factored into the new ipad purchase.

I didn't realize it was "illegal".
SO, I think i'll do the verizon/att. I'm leanig towards Verizon because their 1GB data plan is $20. That's about all she'll need.
Anyone know if Best Buy will put these out to pre-order?
suddenly my ipad 2 16gb wifi feels weak
Also, you may want to ask a Verizon or AT&T store if they'll be getting any in.
