I can look forward to spending the next 30+ years working in an area of business which I absolutely despise (HR). Despite companies paying very good money for my services, my advice is routinely ignored as the clients invariably decide to "just customize the code" to do whatever crazy and logically un-supportable thing they think is necessary.
People who have never used the systems I implement tell me I'm wrong when I explain what can and cannot be done. People who have no idea how the data elements flow through the systems I implement tell me that I'm wrong when I tell them that they need to implement additional reporting structures to achieve their goals. Companies who have customized every aspect of their existing software act surprised when I tell them that their customizations have negated the built-in ability of my system to integrate with their existing systems.
Looking forward, my skillset is now so specialized that any meaningful career transition would require a significant reduction in pay which means that, for practical purposes I am trapped in a line of work that I truly hate.
So no, I'm not happy. Frankly, I don't see myself becoming happy at any point in the future either. But the alternative option really just isn't palatable so I just keep putting on foot in front of the other each day.
