If I didn't know any better, I would think there are nothing but a bunch of scrooges

i think i might be a scrooge.

i live on the same amount of money that i when i had my first job. i rent the cheapest apartment i can find. i drive cars for 10+ years till they die. i only take vacations out of state if work is paying for the flight or if i can buy the ticket with reward points. i let myself eat at a restaurant once per month, but only somewhere i can eat for less than 5$. i let myself go to one or two movies per year. i do all my shopping at aldi and walmart. i only buy clothes that cost less than 20$. i try to save more of my income every year - currently above %50 gross.

but my goal is to be financially independent at 45, so i need to save as much as i can.

sometimes i wish i could let myself have a crazy year where i take the 20$k+ additional money that i save over and above max 401k/roth ira, and just spend it on an amazing vacation, monthly tickets to the orchestra, visits to awesome restaurants, movies, and whatever else.

just one year.

dude its awesome to save. You got that shit covered. Now spend some capital on life and enjoy it. Maybe once a month do something for you bro.

If you like the orchestra go man! Depending on where you live they should have a appreciation club. Great way to meet chicks with like interests.

yep cleveland! orchestra is fantastic, but tickets are like 80$

though there is a young adults club where i could get tickets for 40$ and "mingle" with other young adults, but i dont really fit into situations like that. i would just stand around awkwardly.

Bring a wingman!

Or even better bring a wing woman. Have any girls that are just friends? hell a sister?

Shit I would go with you but I would krimp your style since I would have my brood of kids with me.

Man, I wish I still lived in Ohio.

I have fond memories of seasons at Severance Hall and Blossom Music Center when I was a kid.

So many good musical memories. :hmm:

That was true in 1970.

You gotta ramp those figures up substantially.

Assuming a 4-5% yield, which I've found a not too high risk way to do, $500k would be enough. I might even have some to spare.

Perhaps. I was poor as a child and don't want to go back to that. If I ever want a car, I want to be able to walk into a dealership and hand over cash for it.
I understand wanting to be able to do it, but given the average joe can probably secure a loan for a new car for under 3%, I think paying cash for a car right now is a singularly terrible idea.

I might be obsessed with money. I play the lotto all the time and have entered PCH.com every damn day for a month trying to win, but I know that's not gonna happen. Money is every thing. Without it life just sucks! I get so pissed off when people say money can't buy love. Who cares!

My Karajan copy pops a little on the record player but still sounds soo good.

Do you have any vinyl Brian?

wish the Cleveland opera company was still going. I had performed there when David and Carol ran it. Was a real shame they had their worst few years during the economic crisis. So many opera houses lost this last ten years.

It's hard not to when every time I want to do something I enjoy, I have to fork over some and there's not enough to do all the fun things I want.

I don't think any of that is over the top, other than vacations. Stuff you buy, cars you drive, saving money on all that only makes sense. Keeping an eye on a specific goal is even better.

But putting off vacations till late in life leads to regret. If your job really takes you to all sorts of places, you are set. But if you are re-visiting the same old well-worn cities, you are not vacationing. There are umpteen places you can visit for dirt cheap that will build memories. And memories can be pretty much priceless.

Not obsessed, but I definitely plan my home economy, so I don't have to fear for unexpected costs. And I was also happy to get $50 back in taxes, instead of paying ~$1000 as I expected.

Maybe a bit, but I'd rather overthink it rather than ignore it like most idiots.

I'm not obsessed with money, but I've hit that ironic point where in order to "ensure" I don't have money problems and associated stress, I stress myself the fuck out in regards to money even though I'm probably in a really good financial state right now.

It's very VERY obnoxious. Especially when I stress over buying expensive meals and friends think I'm being way too cheap.

I decided to be anal about money which paradoxically reduced obsession to zero.

yeah i have some that i got from my great grandma when she died. nothing classical, there's just a lot of elvis, aretha franklin and other singers from the 60s-80s. my favorites are the roger miller record, and the smothers brothers (those guys are hilarious).

yeah, i really want to go to europe and hawaii. but the flights are so expensive so i havent been able to convince myself to do it.

most vacations i just stay at home for a week, but i try to have one go-away vacation per year.
