It's easy to use Torrents and not get caught. Just use one of those blocking things. But be it torrent or Usenet, the same 720p TV shows hit both sides.

I've been a Usenet user for years, but I still don't see how one can use that much bandwidth. You'd have to be a couch potato at the same time and just sit there consuming hours and hours of stuff, or you're just downloading too much to never watch

back before torrents I ran an FTP server for a while and would do 500gb-1tb a weekend, which was far more impressive since 500gb HDD's cost about 150 bucks.

glad i got out of that before they really cracked down on screeners and game piracy.

i've only seen one movie in a theater in the last 5 years. kids mostly. i've started to buy movies again but only selected blu rays and dvd's for kids to watch over and over. everything else i can rent once or netflix streaming

when i had a few hundred CD's and 250 DVD's i realized that i would watch a few discs a lot and most would only be seen once a year or less

and other than kids after i bought an ipad i started reading a lot more. amazon has free or low cost kindle books all the time. someone gave me a file last year with a few hundred scifi/fantasy/horror books. i have a reading list to go through that's going to take me a few years at least

even before kids i didn't sit around the whole weekend with my wife watching tv. there is the beach, trips around NYC to different places, just go to the mall to walk around and eat out, family functions, etc

i hate throttling, although it never affects me because i typically use much less than 1 gb a month. but i also hate data hogs that cause it, but even they arent as bad as people who censor and violate the first amendment. why are you guys worried about data hogs when there are FIRST AMENDMENT VIOLATORS OUT THERE????????

yea wireless is inherently limited, im fine if they use smart network management to throttle stupid uses like torrents or anything like that. it should still be unlimited though.

wired limits are just exploiting the position natural monopoly and a toothless government.

in this day and age, its probably usenet AND torrents for the real heavy pirate types.

when i was on comcast in the bay area they had a 250gb cap that people whined about (it was not really enforced but you got a little meter in your accoutn screen) and the closest i ever got to it was 180gb and most of the time i was under 100gb. it is REALLY hard to use 100gb unless you are downloading stuff constantly.

but i know i have friends who are big into usenet / torrenting and of course they can only download blu-ray rips so on uncapped providers they can easily blow through 500gb-700gb a month.

On my cell phone since I got 4G (2 billing cycles) I've used 10+ gb streaming Netflix at work. I'll admit I fall in the "data hog" category, but I have unlimited 4G data. If I choose to use that, then so be it.

More than a year ago there was a guy over at Android Central bragging that he went through over 50GB in a month with his EVO and one of the moderator/writers was so thrilled he suggested a competition to see who could use the most data. It's this kind of brain dead activity that's giving the carriers all the justification they need to limit data and raise prices.

Their 3G is much faster, so fast that Netflix is actually a reasonable proposition.

I have 2GB of 4G included in my plan and I haven't exceeded a few hundred MB yet. If I'm at home, it's on wi-fi. If I'm at family, it's on wi-fi. If I'm at a friend's place, chances are it's on wi-fi. If I'm in a coffee shop or something, it's on wi-fi. I guess I just don't spend enough time where there's no wi-fi to even care about this?

That pisses me off because I'm a casual teatherer. I probably use a few hundred mb per month tethering but people who use it a replacement for home broadband are going to ruin it for everyone.

I'd say it's the carrier's fault because they advertised these plans as "unlimited". If they clearly stated from the get go that there is a limit, and going over the limit results in throttled speeds, we wouldn't have this problem. But nope, they had to be greedy with their marketing.

Not to say the data hog users aren't at fault as well, but I think the carriers are more at fault.

But unlimited data was. And many people, myself included, fail to see why it matters what end device is using the data.

I have unlimited data, so if I develop a program for my phone that just sits here and uses my data 100% of capacity 24/7 that's apparently ok. However if I tether my phone to my laptop and browse the web, that isn't according to carriers. As I stated before I have used 10+ gb since getting 4G 2 months ago on my phone. I haven't tethered at all. But previously on my Milestone, I would tether all the time and only use ~3-4 gb's month at most. Carriers are bitching about data usage and how expensive it is for them, but then take actions that do not support that stance. I would get a C&D type letter (or just tethering added to my bill) if the carrier discovered I was tethering my Milestone, but streaming 12 gb's of Netflix last month was cool by them.

tethering is a business feature which means it has to be a money maker. and tethering can use more data. the data for the phone is limited by the resolution. will netflix stream 1080p to a phone? if it's tethered then you can in theory use as much data as your laptop can consume

and carriers can't just build towers. other than zoning issues you have to make sure it won't interfere with existing towers in the area so in some places you can't build anymore

Tethering restrictions are from an era when even Smartphones could only consume so much data- it took a real computer to use huge chunks of data.

Now with superphones and tablets it is easier to use real computer amounts of data on a smartphone. Lack of a decent Usenet client is all that holds me back on vacation.
