It seems like the concentration for those on some form of government assistance is high on this forum. Could be wrong, but I doubt it. I'm lucky to not be part of it. I'd do my best to avoid being on it and continue working if something ever happened. Being dependent on the small amount of money the government gives is no way I would want to live my life.

People easily get butt-hurt when your opinion doesn't coincide EXACTLY with theirs. The partisanship here is at epic levels - and then someone has to inevitably get butt hurt in the debate and it just ends up like this:

I have noticed there seems to be a a lot of that. Not just here, but IRL. I know people who are capable of working that are on disability. Sometimes it makes me feel like a sucker.

Most would rather invest that energy in actual work. This is entirely separate from things like food stamps or, educational training.

But if you think there isn't grounds for concern of the substantial amount of abuse, then just go to your nearest Walmart and see who parks in a handicapped parking space. If you think they are taken by people that are "disabled" then I have a bridge to sell you.

Hell, if anything the people that take those spaces should have an assigned parking space where they are only allowed to park in the back of the lot.

Never been on disability myself, but of course I have friends and family who are disabled. My MIL paid into the system for 30+ years and only stopped working when her arthritis limited her mobility in both arms and legs. Wife's Aunt adopted 2 boys with Autism when they were babies, and they collect a small amount of disability benefits. They are in their 20s now, and likely will never be self sufficient.

I have Major Depression Disorder and ended up losing a decent job and becoming homeless over it. Don't be so quick to judge.

I think you are wrong. 40 percent of adult Americans would not be able to cover an unexpected $400 expense, but on this forum, less than 4% (i.e. Mayne) can't. Over 75% can cover $4000 or more.

Technology is approachable for someone that can't do highly physical things. A paraplegic can build a computer. Once they got here researching tech, they stayed because they have someone to talk to. Speculation, but I'd expect a higher concentration of disability.

My wife is on disability. Her back is fubar and had a spinal fusion, besides since she's been on disability she's had both knees, one shoulder,a hip replaced, diagnosed with degenerative bone disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Sitting is the worst thing for her. Not too many jobs you can do laying down alternating with standing for short periods.

No. I had a spinal fusion ten years ago, and my back is not the same. I have some limitations, and work four days a week. I'll do some Fridays here and there but usually pay for it.

my fiancee was on short term disability last year for PTSD and anxiety. It was a blessing as she couldn't work and she was going to outpatient therapy almost every day and that was where she had to focus. I think that lasted four months or so, maybe a little longer. She is now working almost full-time and going to school for IT. Disability helped keep her going until she could get back up on her feet.

I couldn't finished my last post to this due being sleepy after taking my night meds. There is nothing wrong with getting government assistance if you need it and I learned that lesson the hard way. Yes some people abused the system or are committing fraud.

Yes...I am, but apparently, I’m just old and fat and lazy...and it has nothing to do with my fucked up back (to much damage to repair according to my neurosurgeon) and knees that SHOULD both be replaced.
I mean...who the hell wouldn’t want to give up a nice, cushy union construction job that paid around $40/hr, working an average of 2500 hours per year with copious overtime and double time with some of the best H&W benefits in the trades...in exchange for SSDI benefits and Medicare? It’s only a cut in pay of about 80% with insurance that is the worst I’ve ever had...but is better than no insurance?
