Saw this on CNN this morning. The site lets you put in your address and what you pay for rent then it searches the area for the average rates and shows other options.

http://www.rentometer.com/

Site is really slow right now. I suspect CNN promoting the site is a bit much for them to handle right now.

I'm definitely paying too much... I found out that the person who lives right above me and has a bigger apartment than me is paying almost $100 less/month. it's just that moving is such a monumental effort.

if my rent goes up again this year, though, this will be my last year in the apartment. my aunt has a gigantic 2-bedroom that she'd be willing to rent to me for almost half of what I'm paying for my 1-bedroom, the only down sides are: street parking (and parking sucks), having to pay to park by the train station (since I'd have to start working out of our NYC office) would balance out the rent savings, and I'd likely be expected to help my aunt with yard work, running errands, general upkeep, etc.

I would take a place with a yard over an apartment any day. It is nice to be able to do what you want in the yard without having to worry about someone complaining.

I'm lucky on the rent I pay. The apartment is rent controlled thanks to my uncle having lived here for the past 30 years . When he passed I was able to continue his lease at the same rate, $115 a month. It is a one bedroom, in good condition with free water. The only issue is it is in a really small town, 7500 people. I thought of moving several times since my clients are in Raleigh which is about 55 miles away, but when I look at the rent there I just cannot justify the cost . I work mostly from home so only have to make the trip to Raleigh about once a month.

Don't think you're losing out though, the difference between living in an apt and a house is amazing.

it's still an apartment.

my aunt owns a 2-family house (as opposed to the 4-family that I'm in right now). she lives on the second floor and rents out the first floor.

CNN put up the information. It's the CNN effect, which dwarfs the ATOT effect.

This site is stupid. All it takes into account is the physical location and number of bedrooms. It doesn't include any other important variables like:

- condition/age of apartment
- amenities
- stores/activities/whatever in the vicinity
- proximity to good parking and access to public transportation

What a waste.

I already know I'm paying way too much, but that's because my area is ridiculously expensive to live in. It's in New York, so property taxes drive up rental prices and the fact that it's one of the few decent places to live doesn't help. If I searched up apartments with washer/dryer in unit, I'd find... I believe two or three apartment complexes that have it and all are rather expensive. My brother rents a similar apartment compared to mine in Illinois for around $200 less a month.

Not to mention my apartment complex has rather draconian lease rules... like I can't cancel my lease for any reason unless I take up their crazy protection schemes (which are so riddled with rules, they're not even worth it). For example, the job relocation protection requires an extra month's rent down and it cannot be used within 6 months of signing your lease (12 month leases). It still requires you to give 30 days notice.

Well, I already know I'm paying too much, but I live in a complex with a lot of amenities.

The place where I currently live is a duplex and we pay a very reasonable amount of rent for the area. I used to live in an apartment complex here in town and they ass-raped you every way they could.

However this month I am moving to the Cleveland area, and I think we are paying a bit too much for the place we have. However the vast amount of options were basically either in the ghetto or in the projects.
