I just got two 1440 IPS, so I'm going to hold on until I know what permutation of high res, ___sync and high refresh rate I really want.

I'm not buying jack till they all settle down with the g/free sync and refresh rate stuff.
Even when they do settle down it'll be a year or so unless they are smokin good deals.
Five years is about my typical monitor refresh schedule. I just now bought a 27" IPS a little over a year ago. I'd really rather spend the money on VR(and it be worth doing so).

I've went on a spending rampage this year and I HAVE to tone it down a bit. But seeing as I will need a new monitor because I use my TV as a monitor and its response time is like half a second (And I'm getting owned in BF4), I may upgrade sometime between now and the summer. Will I buy a 4K? Maybe. If by then I have the GPU horsepower (Like CF 390x or something), FreeSync is widespread (Which it probably will be) and I have the money, then maybe. If I somehow find myself with more money than I can spend (Hardly a possibility, but still) I may buy a 4K IPS for productivity and playing anything where timing isn't crucial and then also buy a 1080p/1440p 120/144Hz monitor to do my FPS/whatever type of gaming that needs speed. But that's just me daydreaming and I will probably "just" buy a 1440p 100+Hz for the lowest price I can find and wait for a few years for 4K.

When 4k is as affordable as 1080p i intend on switching, content streaming in 4k would have to be commonplace and my ISP obviously isn't streaming speeds good enough for 4k. I use my pc for entertainment/gaming so something that works with a native resolution would be awesome.

MUCH more interested in 3440x1440. Please push someone to deliver a monitor with that rez and with Freesync.

I would only get a 4K monitor if it's the same or better than my existing display in every way. That means it should do at least 120hz, glossy, backlight strobing (Lightboost, etc.), and ideally gsync. It could be a long time before such a monitor comes out, especially since DP 1.2 doesn't even support enough bandwidth for 4K at 120hz, although if it does I would be willing to pay big bucks for it. The performance at 4K is less of a concern for me, as I would just run modern games unscaled at 1920x1080 and stick to older ones for 4K. 4K is probably the first resolution that can run at 1/4 size without scaling and still look decent.

Eventually. But my next monitor purchase is likely to be a 1440P unit capable of a fast refresh rate and Freesync.

I fancy a 21:9 screen down the road,I also can't go back to TN panels,it's VA or IPS for me so 4K have to wait and only when GPU get a lot better speed wise.

If I could build a rig today, it'd be with a 4K monitor, likely the Acer. The 295 x2 can still drive 60 fps on that baby and it would be amazing. I had a 30" 1600P monitor for a while and that thing was awesome...it died (cause it was a POS samsung 305t+) and now I'm stuck at 1080P. No comparison. I'd buy a 4K right now to tide me over until I could get a 4K OLED monitor, which I anticipate will be readily available in 4 years or so.

4K scaling is still a mess on Windows, video content is almost non-existent, and performance requirements for gaming are way too high. Sticking with 1080p for a few more years.

This. It might be ok for gaming and watching some videos, but I saw a 4k monitor and while pictures looked great the windows desktop was awful. 1440p is a good place to be, or maybe dual 1080p monitors.

Having seen the 5k displays on the retina iMacs, I'd definitely agree about pixel density being a really rather good thing You'll have some sane 5k monitor options at 27/8" in a year or two of course.

Think I'd quite likely buy a P2415Q if I was doing a new build. I'd need to replace a few things to run one now so might wait a little.
(Although I wouldn't be doing for gaming as such. It'd be for everything else - photos, text etc with gaming as a side benefit.).

There's a few problems with 4K IMO.

1) Too expensive currently for quality ones. I have seen lower priced models but read about some issues with them as far as QC goes.

2) Not enough other 4k content(movies and such).

3) Games at 4k take more power than I am willing to spend money on. Even though I have SLI 970s, when I use DSR to scale to 4k resolution it renders many games unplayable to me. I am unwilling to turn down the visual settings to get higher fps. I'm not saying this would be the case for everyone but I want a bit better performance from some titles than I get in 4k with my 970s.

I hear the new TN panels are actually quite good, but I'd want to see it in person. I have a TN panel now, it's ok, but I've used plenty of higher quality panels and can tell some difference. But, it sounds like they've made some improvement. I think 1440P/1600P is somewhat of a sweet spot right now as far as modern GPU horsepower goes. Of course if the next round of GPU's is strong enough to push 4k well, I might consider it. But 120Hz with sync and preferably IPS would make me happy. I have a 1200P 27" TN panel now, so any of them (1440P/1600P/4k) will look sharper.

I'd only do 4k, like many others here, when we get 4k, 120hz, IPS/OLED, with low input lag at a reasonable price. Yes I know, asking the impossible. But I'm one of the guys who held on to my fw900 for a long time and nothing beats that monitor for twitch gaming.

Just got a nice 27 inch 1440p display during the Black Friday sales. Next upgrade will be GPU as the newer games become more demanding. Very happy how the display is performing with my current setup.

4K is just another coat of polish on the turd known as LCD, so no thanks.

This. I just don't understand why consumers continue to put up with bright-grey as a representation of the color black. Playing games where there are dark areas on an LCD is [redacted] painful.

Profanity isn't allowed in the technical forums.
