Are you ready for Zika?

This could be the year many people regret not taking it seriously. Most recent estimates have it further into the US this summer than previously expected. So far there hasn't been any cases spread nationally but that will change.

Update 7/29/16:

Zika in Florida

Four individuals in Miami-Dade and Broward counties have been infected with the Zika virus by local mosquitoes, Florida health officials said Friday.

These are the first known cases of the virus being transmitted by mosquitoes in the continental United States.

"While no mosquitoes trapped tested positive for the Zika virus, the department believes these cases were likely transmitted through infected mosquitoes in this area," according to a statement from the Florida Department of Health.

I've been saying it for years, there's no reason to go outside. Everything you need can be delivered to your house.

I'll be watching the chaos from my window as the mosquitoes invade our towns and cities.

So...as an adult male who can no long sew my wild oats (snipped) outside of a 20% chance of a rash and a fever...I have no real reason to be worried, right?

Correct, nothing to worry about unless you are one of the millions that are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

One thing I don't understand is once you have it can you get it again or is it like other viruses where you're essentially immune?

As if the South isn't retarded enough already ... scary stuff!
^ this raised to the factor of a billion.

And while I have no children, plan on having no children, etc., it is still scary as to how it can impact the economy, the future workforce, etc.

People have to stop travelling to those areas. That's how it spreads. As much as I'm against government controlling the people, I'm for it if it's REALLY to protect them, they should restrict travel to those areas, kinda like they were doing with Ebola. But even then they were not screening people enough who did go, and Ebola spreads super easily so that did not help either. Not sure if Zika is worse.

Just keep that shit out of Canada. I think we should build a wall and make the mosquitoes pay for it.

If it really ends up covering half of the United States I'll eat a piece of my own poop.

besides getting paralyzed and stuff perhaps
http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/03/why-does-zika-leave-some-patients-paralyzed

While the worries that the Zika virus will cause severe birth defects if it infects pregnant woman have grabbed most of the headlines, this week researchers reported more evidence that an encounter with the virus can also leave some people temporarily paralyzed: On Monday, The Lancet published the first systematic study of a possible link between the virus and Guillain-Barré syndrome. The data add support to the theory that the recent increase in cases of sudden paralysis across Latin America is due to the spreading Zika outbreak. Science answers some key questions about the syndrome.

I’ve never heard of Guillain-Barré syndrome. What is it?

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an unusual reaction to several kinds of infection, which leaves people immobile to varying degrees. A few days or weeks after a person has recovered from their initial symptoms, they experience sudden numbness and weakness in their limbs, which can progress to the point where they are partially or completely paralyzed. People usually recover sensation and movement over a period of weeks or months, but many suffer lasting effects, including limb weakness and lingering tingling sensations.

What is it you do for a living again? :sneaky:

Aren't you supposed to be on a beach or in a boat or on vacation drinking beers?

This is just how I picture your life from all the pictures of ridiculous weather you post. Then again, you Californians are so spoiled it's not even remotely funny. Instead, I'm holed up in a NY apartment somewhere ...... ~50 degrees and windy today. The sun might come out today. Then again, it might not.

I walked out of the house this morning wearing a polo shirt and khaki pants. No jacket. This is pretty much my work attire year round. I might wear a light jacket between Dec-Feb on the coldest mornings. We haven't used the heat in our house in over a month.

I'll post some pics from the Long Beach Grand Prix this weekend for you (the forecast is 78 degrees and sunny).

Well, I'm flying to Beantown Friday morning to visit the old college roomies. Not too many plans other than do the Sam Adam's tour sometime between 10 - 3 on Saturday. With the marathon this weekend, they've got a few special brews being made. Rangers playoff game 2 is Saturday at 3 as well, so I'm gonna try not to get my ass beat at a bar in the middle of Boston with my NYR hat on. I was happier than hell to see mid-50's and sun for the trip though - LOL. I hate you.
