People have to stop travelling to those areas. That's how it spreads. As much as I'm against government controlling the people, I'm for it if it's REALLY to protect them, they should restrict travel to those areas, kinda like they were doing with Ebola. But even then they were not screening people enough who did go, and Ebola spreads super easily so that did not help either. Not sure if Zika is worse.

Just keep that shit out of Canada. I think we should build a wall and make the mosquitoes pay for it.

Ebola doesn't spread "super easily."

There is a good possibility that the Zika Virus is man made.
Your tin hat seems to be a little loose. The Zika virus was discovered in 1947, long before any type of genetic ability to man make something like this.

So...as an adult male who can no long sew my wild oats (snipped) outside of a 20% chance of a rash and a fever...I have no real reason to be worried, right?

I would worry about my kids getting it if I had any. There's too much unknown. I also have family in Brazil, and while people are very concerned, few of the apartments have screens or air conditioning, and they need to keep their windows and/or balcony open at night just to get fresh air to cool the place off.

I've been in Aruba for the past few days. I am somewhat concerned and using extra mosquito repellent. We were thinking about going horseback riding here but will probably cancel that. So far I havent seen a mosquito or even anything but a fly. It may be because Aruba is fairly arid (no puddles or areas of standing water) rather than lush jungle like.

Watching the globe, Zika travel thru space and time reminded me of Plague Inc. It's sort of creepy now that I think about.

I think that's how some of the worst infections will spread, quickly and by people not taking them seriously enough early on. The assumption it won't take a very long time for a vaccine to be available, but virus' can be some tricky and elusive bastards.

What I'm most concerned about...

Is the fact that the OP has been around since 2000, has 27,000 posts, and I don't remember ever seeing a post by him before.

Must be a non-OTer.

well, and then there's this:

CDC confirms Zika virus does cause microcephaly

"This study marks a turning point in the Zika outbreak," CDC Director Tom Frieden said in a statement. "It is now clear that the virus causes microcephaly."

The researchers came to their conclusion by checking existing data against a set of seven rules, known as Shepard's Criteria. The list was developed by a pediatric doctor, Thomas Shepard, as a way to establish if something causes birth defects. When at least some of these criteria are met, it usually serves as "proof" that exposure to a particular agent — such as a disease or some kind of chemical — causes fetal abnormalities.

The data review showed that Zika met the necessary standards for being considered a defect-causing agent. First, many women who get Zika during a critical time of pregnancy — such as the first or second trimester — have babies with birth defects. Additionally, many of the fetuses that are exposed to Zika have followed the same, specific pattern: they are born with abnormally small heads or have other brain anomalies. And finally, many women have given birth to babies with microcephaly after having traveled to areas with ongoing Zika outbreaks. All of this evidence is enough to conclude that Zika causes microcephaly, the researchers argue, though the virus satisfies even more criteria on the list.

928 cases in Puerto Rico, 128 pregnant women [Ns1]
Puerto Rico has counted 925 cases of Zika, including 128 pregnant women. At least 14 pregnant women infected with Zika have given birth to healthy babies. Rius said the unidentified woman who donated her fetus did not test positive for Zika or present symptoms but she clearly was infected at one point. The health secretary noted that there is only a short period when people with Zika test positive for the virus, and after that it no longer shows up.

So far, 27 people with Zika have been hospitalized in Puerto Rico, and one Zika-related death has been reported.
Brazilian Zika strain found in Africa
Tests show an outbreak of Zika virus on the African island chain of Cape Verde is of the same strain as the one blamed for birth abnormalities in Brazil, the World Health Organization said on Friday.
Zika virus expected in Europe by late spring

Number of pregnant women with Zika virus in U.S. triples, CDC says
The number of pregnant women in the United States reported to have the Zika virus has more than tripled, increasing from 48 to 157, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

...Not a single person is known to have contracted Zika from a mosquito bite in the U.S. They've gotten it while traveling to a country where Zika is endemic, or they've contracted it sexually from a male partner who's traveled to one of those areas.
