Are you required to use your personal automobile for your job?

Are you required to use your own automobile to perform duties of your job or does your employer require you to drive to work? If you are your own boss, please use the "work independently options". The policy is iffy at my job (not required but strongly urged to have one) and I am curious to know what it is for everyone elses.

Yes I'm required to... but very little. I drive maybe 20km a week. $0.48/km

Poll is a little strange. If you work independently, it's your car whether it's your personal car or a beater you use for work duty.

Once a while, I need to run to client's office to review paperwork or meeting or class/seminar. I get pay $0.50 per mile.

I guess both of those would count in this case. That whole business/personal assets thing gets iffy if you are your own business.

I have to get to places away from the office, but I guess I am not required to use a car (though it seems impossible for me not to).

I do get reimbursed for my milage.

Yes but I get paid back for mileage and it is more than the gas costs so it isn't bad.

They give me a vehicle to use, with unlimited personal usage as well. Along with that I get a fuel card for that car only with unlimited fuel (business & personal). They also cover all maintenance and insurance.

And they give me a new one every 4 years or 90K miles. :awe:

I don't own another vehicle at this time.

I don't think I can get to my job without my own car, unless I carpooled. So kind of... to get there anyway.

Nope. I sit at a desk in front of a computer all day. All my customers are from inside the company.

I drive to work but that isn't part of my job obviously.

Yes I do. Some weeks I put 600 miles on my car to work at our customer's site. (450 of that is reimbursed).

It would be theoretically possible for me to take public transportation to get to work, but it would take over an hour and multiple transfers whereas it only takes me 20 minutes to drive there.

Once I'm there, I am never required to drive anywhere.

Using your car to perform you job and driving to work are two completely different things. How you get to your job is entirely on you. I could take public transportation, I could walk, I could rollerskate to work, I could carpool, I could ride a bicycle, I could ride a motorcycle. This is not related at all to doing my job. Being there is critical but how I get there is not.

I was listening to the "ask the lawyer" show last weekend and this guy called in and claimed his insurance company wouldn't pay to get his car fixed (even though he had collision) because a drunk driver plowed into him while he was delivering pizzas. Using your vehicle for work might come with some unintended consequences.

They have 2 cars at work. If I'm required on a jobsite I'll use my own only if those 2 are in use. If I get in an accident, the insurance company only knows that I was in an accident. If they ask if I was working - yes, but the vehicle is only used to transport me to and from the job site. Its not used "in the normal course of business". Actually the answer I give in reality is No. I was just driving.

I drive my own car to pick up the mail everyday at work. It's not a requirement, but someone has to do it. I get reimbursed for it.

It's only like within a mile.

yes some(most?) places wont cover delivery stuff due to the extended time you spend in the car for work

the guy probably LIED on his insurance app about it, I know my agent had to ask me if I would use any vehciles on my policy for delivery

Nope. Given a take-home company truck with gas card first day on my current job. Saves me a lot of money.

Other jobs I've had just say you need "reliable transportation".
