Been using 8 since Christmas Eve along withe Start8. It's a shame that MS didn't give us this option out of the box. "Metro" is a mess and poorly integrated which takes so much away from the core of the product.

Vista was a new OS. Most of the "bad experiences" were 3rd party drivers, apps or the lack of compatability

He means MS decided to pretend windows 7 was a new OS (to shake vista stigma) and not just a vista service pack which is a fair assessment of what windows 7 actually is.

Plus OEM companies shipping Vista with hardware below recommended specs for Vista, personally I thought Vista was a very good OS,Win7 is based on Vista anyway with two years further refinement etc..a lot of people forget that, amazing how much unjustified FUD there was about Vista.

As to Win8 nothing wrong with it,as I keep saying got it on three PCs, its fast, stable and runs all my games /software just fine,no drivers issues either so not much more you can ask in a good OS.

Don't forget the pre-loaded bloatware of Windows Live, the constant "Are you sure you want to click that?" prompts, and the sluggish performance on even the most powerful machines.

They did fix it after the service pack, but the damage was already done.

yes, it's a fair assessment. Which W8 is kinda too. But really that's what all OS's do. Each one is most often just an evolution of the previous.
I just wish MS broke up with the Registry in Vista as well, it's archaic and horrible. Developers might complain but we would likely be in a much better place now imo. I try to use portable apps whenever possible, helped me out on the performance degradation side of it.

I get Windows licenses practically for free, but do not feel a need to upgrade and rock the boat on my old desktop. When I build my next desktop, it will have Windows 8. I'm confident Win8 will be as good or better as Win7 for everything I currently do with Win7.

That said, I don't expect to be using many Metro apps. I also don't want to develop Metro software myself since they are subject to arbitrary (content) censorship by Microsoft. If Microsoft decided to make simple, officially supported sideloading available on Win8 (like on Android - check a box in system settings to be able to install 3rd party software), I would be a lot more interested in Metro.

I'm never going to touch Skydrive, nor am I going to touch Windows on mobile. It is totally ridiculous that Microsoft scans users' private, unshared content for "vulgarity", "profanity", "nudity in nonhuman forms such as cartoons" and a zillion other things that are even legal to print in a newspaper, then bans users based on their findings. After a fuck-up of this magnitude, the only way Microsoft could get me to use their cloud storage in the future is by creating an option for users to manage their own encryption keys in such a way that Microsoft is never in possession of the key or the unencrypted data.

I hear what you are saying,Skydrive I don't use either ,however you can unpin it from Metro or uninstall it so not an issue,I've no intention of using Windows for mobile either.

I'm using Android OS for my tablet and smartphone however I'm very happy with Win8 as a desktop and gamer, most members here probably know that, its fast, rock stable,no issues with drivers or gaming I do .

I can customize it both in Metro and Desktop to my style/needs,Win8 is very customizable in that department, end of the day no OS is perfect and you will always get those that don't like a certain OS ,regardless I'll stay with 8 until 9 comes along and probably try that due to liking to try new things and also getting a bit bored with Win8,once you know the OS well and have no issues it does get a bit boring.

As to Microsoft scanning private stuff, did not surprise me to be honest typical Microsoft tactics.

I have 8 on a selectable drive machine along with 7. I use it as a training device for myself, and it seems OK as long as I use Start8 with it. OTH, I will skip it as my primary OS. I will keep 8 and use it in order to learn it. This week, it got 19 updates!

Were you able to install all of those updates?

There are 2 - 2751352 and 2768703 - that I could not get to install.

I'm back on windows 7. Too many issues for me with 8.

We're not talking about a [simple] video game. It's an operating system. I want it to be _usable_, not entertaining. And Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 have each taken steps backward in usability.

No profanity (even self-censored) in the technical forums, please

Somebody got out of the wrong side of the bed,try posting in a calm polite way which costs nothing,,did you even read my post?...

Desktop means using it as desktop user for software I throw at,drivers are for many things ie sound, video,USB,Lan,IRST etc....

Plenty of users would disagree with you about a step backwards with Vista,Win7 etc...I can think of a few forward steps ie Vista ( which had a new sound structure to improve sound/driver stability and security improvements which XP did not have),Win7 builds on Vista with performance improvements etc..same goes for Win8.

Yeah. You get bored with your OS. Like my 8 year old eventually gets with a new toy.

Did you read _my_ post? USABILITY. Driver and security issues are not usability issues. I'll grant that there are many improvements in the underlying OS. But very few, if any, in the user interface.

Tech people generally like to try new things. I think the comment about trying new OS's falls into that category.

I have to disagree about the usability angle, especially when it comes to what Vista / Win7 brought to the desktop. Things like peek, better taskbar integration with applications. more robust window control, better user libraries etc. made those operating systems much better from a usability standpoint than what we had with XP (IMO of course). I also feel that better driver integration goes straight to usability. A video driver crashing for example makes for a fairly unusable system.

I am curious in what way do you feel Vista / Win7 were a step backwards in desktop usability? I have to assume we are comparing to Windows XP. If we are to focus solely on Windows 8 then I can see the argument, particularly with Metro. I don't see it with Windows 7 though.

DaveStall pointed out a few more, besides security is a usable feature, nobody will use an OS if its full of security holes and we all know a lot of users already use MSE and Windows firewall etc...,as to drivers again they can effect stability, performance, bug fixes etc... so yes they are important.

Try being more specific, whats not usable or has usability issues in Vista/Win7/Win8?

I played with my brother's laptop I got him which has a touchscreen, and with some playing around I decided it was actually pretty slick and well thought out (for the most part). There's still a few things I couldn't do easily and some of the usual options are in odd spots, but that's more of a case of re-learning than a design problem. However, without the touchscreen it's a sad mess of an OS that will drive anybody into fits.

I thought it was going to be bad enough to turn me off of getting a tablet/hybrid, but that's not the case. So if I do end up getting one soon I'll enjoy using Windows 8, but I'm definitely not going to be upgrading anything I have now to it.
