Are you supposed to rinse after using mouthwash?

You're not supposed to rinse after brushing your teeth or drink/eat anything for 30 minutes. The idea is to allow your teeth to absorb the fluoride.

So my guess would be the same probably applies to mouthwash.

You still need to do a good job spitting out everything.

Rinsing after using mouthwash just washes it all away, hence defeating the purpose.

I rinse out the mouthwash every time. I don't use fluoride mouthwash but make sure to brush for 2-3 mins.

Worked pretty well for me, only 23 cavities.

I stopped using it. It killed all the good bacteria too and the candida started to grow on my tongue and looked all coated. Now it's back to a healthy color and healthy mouth.

The Listerine commercials basically say that it breaks up plaque so it can be brushed away, so yes. Unless you rinse, brush, then spit and leave the residue in your mouth.

No they don't. They advertise that it kills bacteria where brushing and flossing alone can't reach. They once advertised it as being "more effective than flossing" until the ADA threatened to pull their endorsement (they thought it promoted it as a replacement for flossing).

You are thinking of "Plax" or whatever that old product was that used to advertise a lot.

Before.

My dentist always says he wants to trade teeth with me and to keep doing whatever I am doing. I can't bring myself to tell him that I often only brush once a day and rarely floss. I've even heard "looks like you've been flossing well" from other dentists.

Genetics, I guess. I do use an electric toothbrush (correctly!) and I usually go well past the 2 minute timer.

I use mouthwash a couple times a week, more when I feel tenderness, discomfort, or see bleeding. I keep it in the trunk and at work just in case and I attack a few times a day when that happens.

Rinsing is counter productive if you are trying to harden your teeth with fluoride mouthwash, or dealing with bacteria / sulfur deposits with antiseptic mouthwash. You're not negating it completely, but you are prematurely finishing the process that continues after you spit the rinse out. Enamel is porous, giving that fluoride some time to marinate is how it's supposed to be used. Oral bacteria are given an early reprieve from their chemical assault when you rinse...after you rinse.

Just, why? I guess I can see it if you use alcohol based crap, there is the burning issue to acknowledge I suppose.

I buy Oxyfresh mouthwash for my family. Pricier but definitely worth it. They of course say wait at least 30 before food and drink, and with the toothpaste they suggest spitting out the suds when you are done but not rinsing your mouth out with water. They must be right, because it's the only product I've ever tried where using it at night meant not having even a hint of morning mouth when I wake up.

Ok, but here is the issue I have. Fluoride in mouth wash is Sodium Fluoride, your teeth is remineralized by Calcium Fluoride.

The way I understand it is that your body converts Sodium Fluoride into Calcium Fluoride (through an inefficient process) and it then remineralizes your teeth through the saliva which now contains Calcium Fluoride. So letting your teeth "soak" does nothing. Am I misunderstanding this process?

This is also why I don't use Fluoridated toothpaste or rinse. I get my dose of Sodium Fluoride from tap water.

Also do you rinse before or after brushing?
