just wondering for those that have been to all inclusive resorts

if so what is the percentage? lower, same or higher?

was there a noticeable difference in service from those that tipped and those that did not?

thanks

I did, I didn't tip as a percent of what I thought it was worth, just singles for drinks etc and fivers for meals and stuff. *shrug* my 2 cents.

Depends on whether you are at the resort on government bailout money or not.

Many will add a 15-18% charge on your bill. I know the one I went to did. Make sure you're aware of that ahead of time.

Also, ask when you check in how tipping is handled. Some places include it, some tack it on, some expect it a la carte, and some forbid it.

I've been to several. We just leave a few US bucks in the room for the cleaning staff...

All staff on the resorts get similar tips. We bring a stack of US $1 bills with us for this very purpose.

It's all inclusive so there is no bill.

At Sandals they have flat out refused tips saying they are not allowed to accept them but the guys who bring your bags up still usually will take a few bucks.

Tipping is a pain in the ass... everyone should just do their fecking jobs. Either throw it in with fees or pay your damned employees the proper amount.

EDIT>> I fail at reading the topic summary. So to keep it on topic, I believe we threw some bucks on the table but it wasn't considerate of the amount we would have had to pay.

Some places you should. Some places you shouldn't. A simple call to the resort will tell you. Sometimes there's a set amount, and if you choose to spend more it's up to you. Other times there are guidelines and you just choose to follow them or not.

In short: Yes, you will be tipping if you want to continue good service. It's extremely annoying how pervasive tipping culture is, but that's the reality of travel. It only gets worse the more you travel (save for much of the UK perhaps as they have a much better tipping culture), so get used to it.

When I did my research for our all-inclusive resort vacation last year, the reviews said that tips were meant with better cleaning service & better drinks made at the bar. We didn't care about the room really, although I may have left a few bucks, but I did tip some at the bar. Can't say I really noticed a difference, but we were at the lowest-end all inclusive resort in Cancun so the drinks weren't super quality anyway.

Bottom line: depends a bit on the resort, but you can pretty much assume it's welcomed. Whether you get any benefit or not is the question...

In DR we tipped... just singles for drinks and couple bucks for daily room service (usually we requested more beer/water)...
Good thing is after the first 2 days the bartenders knew us and would serve us first tip or no tip... every couple rounds we'd tip

I always tip the bartenders. That way I can walk up to the bar stacked 3 peopled deep from every angle and I'll get a drink as soon as I make eye contact.

And to people who say it's not allowed or discouraged? Be discrete and just slip some bucks with a hand shake. I'm serious.

Very old school, but, of course, it works.

I didn't tip at meals. It felt wrong since we were paying ahead of time. I did leave tip for the maids. Not sure what the actual protocol is.

On a cruise ship - all inclusive (even all inclusive - prepaid tips) - means you should still tip folks like the bartender. Your room guy should get tipped the most - they do a lot of work for very little pay. THe maitreD and waiter/assistant waiter, etc should only get the pre-paid vouchers.

At a 5 star resort "all-inclusive" in Thailand - I was still expected to tip the barkeep and the fellow who kept my room clean.

i did the exact same thing in the DR. the people, bartenders included, seemed so eager to wait on you. it was a nice change.
