Just a simple question: do you plan to upgrade to Skylake-S this year? If so, what platform are you moving from?
Depending on the price of ddr4, yes.
Currently on Z97/Devil's Canyon.
how can I make that decision when I know zero about its performance?
my media server needs upgrading (intel g45, e5300) so it will be getting the z97.That would be silly unless (a game?) comes out with heavy use of compute/HSA. Then Skylake could be very useful. Otherwise you are talking maybe 10-20% improvement at best and that's only if the clock speeds remain close to what Devils Canyon gets, which is still very much in the air.
It's pretty safe to assume that they won't pull an AMD and regress in performance (or at least in some critical areas), so for those of us coming from older platforms, it's the obvious choice if we're not looking to buy until the second half of the year or later.how can I make that decision when I know zero about its performance?
Maybe, depending on personal finances and how well my rig holds up. Phenom II 965 and HD7770, 6GB DDR2. It keeps on playing all the games I want it to, so it's hard to justify a rebuild!
