Are you upgrading to Skylake?

Just a simple question: do you plan to upgrade to Skylake-S this year? If so, what platform are you moving from?

Depending on the price of ddr4, yes.

Currently on Z97/Devil's Canyon.

Yes, the platform in my signature.

However there is more to the story because it triggers a chain of upgrades. My better half gets the 4670, my nephew gets the 3570K.

Another Skylake-U or so will replace the old i5 661 HTPC. Originally I had the 3570K in mind. but we decided we wanted some in NUC size instead of the current Silverston SG05B.

Maybe, depending on personal finances and how well my rig holds up. Phenom II 965 and HD7770, 6GB DDR2. It keeps on playing all the games I want it to, so it's hard to justify a rebuild!

That would be silly unless (a game?) comes out with heavy use of compute/HSA. Then Skylake could be very useful. Otherwise you are talking maybe 10-20% improvement at best and that's only if the clock speeds remain close to what Devils Canyon gets, which is still very much in the air.

No, my sandy i5 is good enough. Most of the new console ports dont interest me anyway. Maybe a new gpu at some point, that is it. Right now I am on a HD7770 which I thought would last a few more years, but the new vram hogs are making it suffer. (Edit: I have only a 450W power supply, so maybe if the much maligned GTX 960 drops enough in price???)

Actually the question is premature anyway. Despite high hopes, we dont have any information about the performance. I am becoming more skeptical as time goes on that we will see more than the customary 5 to 10 percent increase in cpu performance, and I really dont care about igp.

how can I make that decision when I know zero about its performance?

Not sure. Waiting to see how it turns out, might hold out for Cannonlake for my main system...

Though the HTPC will definitely get some sort of Skylake upgrade (4K/HVEC decoding), just not sure in what shape or form yet.

Skylake is probably just another minuscule 10% performance bump considering they are releasing this WAY before Haswell E.

my media server needs upgrading (intel g45, e5300) so it will be getting the z97.

Nope. Just got a 4790k. Think it will be at least 3+ years until I can justify that itch. DDR4 prices will have to come way down.

I'm moving from Ivy Bridge 3570K to its rough equivalent Skylake CPU
My Son will get my current rig, and I'll take the i5-2500S from his machine and upgrade my moms celeron G530

Nope, my 3770K@4,44GHz will be more than enough for 2015 and most probably 2016.

Plan on moving from a laptop to a desktop + 2 in 1 tablet when Skylake finally comes out.

Nope.

I suspect my i5 3570K @ 4.0Ghz will last me till 2018 at the very least.

Probably, yes. Moving up from an i7-860 from 2009. I'm expecting the stock-to-stock performance to be about twice that of the old CPU.

At some point I'll probably get a Skylake-S or Broadwell to replace this Athlon II X4 635 system, but I'm not in a rush. This X4 635/Radeon HD 7850 works well as my primary daily system/secondary gaming system, and I already have a i5-4670K for the more CPU-demanding games and apps.

I am in the same boat as Brunnis above me.

I have an i5-750 from early 2010. I though long and hard about Haswell but held off because there weren't any phenomenal must have games last year that needed it. I still came pretty close to pulling the trigger on an i7-4790k. My current rig is great, but it is missing some things like USB 3.0 and SATA III.

Now with Skylake coming out around the same time as desktop Broadwell, this could be the time to upgrade. The 10% per generation performance improvements and 5% more power efficiency mean that Skylake could be about twice as fast as my current chip and use ~30% less power. That is pretty compelling.

For me the decision to upgrade will depend entirely upon how much absolute performance improvement Skylake brings to single-threaded situations. If it is another 3-5% gain on the CPU side, I will skip. 15% or more, however, and I just might have to upgrade from my Sandy Bridge. Price of DDR4 is alarming, though, hope it crashes by Skylake. :\

I kind of want to upgrade to Skylake simply because it has been around four years since I last assembed a PC for myself. I want to play with new toys! And I want to turn my trusty, reliable Sandy Bridge system into my secondary desktop which I can use to experiment more deeply with linux distros without any fears of losing any data (and then having to restore everything from backup while I twiddle my thumbs).

It's pretty safe to assume that they won't pull an AMD and regress in performance (or at least in some critical areas), so for those of us coming from older platforms, it's the obvious choice if we're not looking to buy until the second half of the year or later.

I'll probably upgrade... I should have my financial situation hammered out by then. Using a 1st-gen i5 right now.

I'm in a similar situation. I've oc'ed my 965 to 3.7 and it just keeps chugging along. I don't game much but I do encode video often and use winrar to archive larger files(2gb+). It seems to do a good job.

I guess like you it comes down to finances. I voted not sure in the poll.
