Look at BFG's average increase from a stock i5 3.3Ghz 2500K to a 4.4Ghz 4790K - it's a mediocre 6% increase in games, after 1 architecture with 14-15% IPC increase, ~700mhz-1.1Ghz increase in CPU clock depending on threading and HT. D::'mad: I can't see Skylake overclocking >1Ghz over IVB i7...

This link is nonsense. Most people are unable to understand that game tests in GPU limits don't have a meaning about CPU performance scalings. You are just another example.

This is exactly what a Gamer will experience playing at 1440/1600p. Isn't it ??

That list also doesnt contain any of the more recent cpu demanding console ports, and also the main resolution is still 1080p. Plus there should be more powerful gpus coming out that could demand more cpu performance. Really there are just too many variables to make a general statement. And of course we dont know the performance of Skylake either.

Or you could go the other way, like I did. Buying lower-power parts, just to see how low you can go with power-consumption and speed, before you can't stand it.
Eventually, you end up with a lot of underpowered junk. Let alone all the time you spend configuring/replacing/benching, instead of doing something really productive.

If you are still on 45nm tech, at any rate, Skylake will provide you with a nice performance boost / efficiency gains / platform upgrade.

Not sure, would be coming from p67 and i7 @ 4600Mhz below the stock VID, so its a hard sell for me. I would like the newer PCI-e, USB 3.0, m.2, etc, but right now I pretty much only use my PC for gaming, and for that with a single card, it would be a very hard sell.

Maybe. I want to see what that socketed, unlocked Broadwell Iris Pro chip will be like first. I would also like to know when Skylake Iris Pro will be replacing it.

I have a 5930K in my gaming box so getting a quad, piffle. The 4770 in my porn box is still adequate for YouPorn, so no point there. Even looking at recent GameGPU benches, Haswell is nearly always on top but compared to SNB - 5 or 6FPS meh, you probably want an i7 by now though:

Maybe - because while I'd like a hexacore '-E' processor; I may not have the extra dollars for the mobo and CPU. Skylake looks interesting - I just hope it delivers a good amount of additional throughput over Haswell.

I guess it depends on what you use your CPU for. If we look at IPC gains:

- IIRC, IPC increase from IVB -> HW ~ 8%
- let's assume 14% for Skylake and another 14% for Icelake (I used these higher values for an optimistic case scenario)
- let's also assume 2017 Icelake overclocks to 5.0Ghz and a decent OC on IVB is 4.7Ghz:

5.0Ghz / 4.7Ghz x 1.08 x 1.14^2 = 49% increase in speed by end of 2017

However, I can almost guarantee that the performance increase in games will be nowhere close to that, probably 10-15% on average against a 4.7Ghz i7 IVB.

Unless there are a handful of games out there that you play all the time where you must have > 60 fps min (Crysis 3) at all times, Intel CPU upgrades for games now are basically more for fun/play with new OCing parts, but for performance increase for games, it's a waste of $.

OTOH, if you actually render, perform compute, etc. on your CPU a 5820@ 4.4Ghz will already be nearly 50% faster than an i7 IVB @ 4.7Ghz today.

I think with the state of PC games in the last 4-5 years, it's better to buy flagship GPU(s), larger SSD and a 21:9/4K monitor before even contemplating a CPU platform upgrade for gaming. Even with my 4-year-old 2500K OC, I would get way more performance from GM200 SLI/380X CF than Skylake @ 5Ghz. For that reason I am going to say that I am still undecided but leaning towards skipping the quad-core i7 Skylake. I would say on the top of my list a 500GB-1TB SSD, high resolution monitor and GPU upgrades sit way above a CPU upgrade*. Just my 2 cents.

*Of course if I can get a smoking hot deal on some parts to upgrade to on the cheap, I'll do it just to play with newer parts. That's always fun. I guess I just have to come to terms that CPU upgrades in the modern times are not like they were in the past.
hmm, I guess my ivy is good to go for a long ass time ahahha. good to know.

I would like to upgrade to a Skylake-K chip but there are only rumors to go by right now. The jump from Sandy Bridge to Haswell is about 14% and if Skylake adds another 10-15% that would be worth it to me.

I will be waiting for Skylake-k, I have no interest in Skylake-s. Also I'll need to see how it OC's. I have i5 2500k and I'm hoping skylake-k is something worth upgrading to.

I'm still really happy with my z77 setup. Upgrading to Skylake? Better have damn good reason.

If haswell to skylake sees the same dramatic increase as seen from ivy to haswell in the software i use, i can imagine myself rolling over. Also if i can get my 2400 cas10 1.65v kit to at least work at 1600 cas 10 at 1.35v (ddr3l nominal volts). Ddr4 will be a no go in my country for at least 2 years, price wise.

I'd only upgrade if the single core performance is greater than the 4790k, which in itself is very good compared to even the X99 chipset

I probably will upgrade from my Sandybridge Core i7 2600K. It is probably unnecessary to upgrade but I just love computers and performance in general.

I have a brand new 4690K, so any upgrades will be quite a ways off. But is Skylake gets delayed for a year past their initial estimates like Broadwell, then a Skylake (I keep wanting to say Skylark!) may be the next chip I upgrade to.

No skylake for me on the desktop (unless something happens to my Haswell rig) but it might be time for a new laptop, for windows, still rocking a 7+ year old Core 2 Duo

Just a simple question: do you plan to upgrade to Skylake-S this year? If so, what platform are you moving from?
My current rig based on Xeon X5650 (6C/12T) @4.1 Ghz with 12GB DDR3, for now it is MORE than enough for me.
Heck this new, and yet old, system still a huge LEAP for me (just moved from X3 720BE).

So, as long as this X5650 can handle new GPU power and technology (gaming & rendering) i would stick with it.

i will upgrade to Skylake most probably...when the next platform AFTER Skylake is released.

and missing option: "if that is the will of Allah."

I'm planning an upgrade to Skylake when the unlocked i7 comes out.

Currently running a Phenom II 965 at 4Ghz, so Skylake should be a pretty substantial upgrade...

Hi there, I'm new here. Maybe I might need to post this in a separate thread.

Ok you'll probably laugh, but I'm running a little ancient rig here that I've had since late 2009 (haven't had time to update due to work travel, but am home now with our first baby, so I have a bit of time - key word bit

Intel Q9550 2.83 Ghz
Asus P5N72T mobo (an nForce 780i board)
8xGB DDR-2 (1066Mhz)

The main things I updated since then were RAM to 8GB from 4GB, my GPU from a GTX 460 to a GTX 750 Ti, and a new SSD for my OS disk. The tech is getting old I admit, no USB 3.0, no UEFI, no AHCI etc, and all sorts of good tech improvements over the last few years.

(made a new post here http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?p=37204602#post37204602

I'm debating if I should update to Haswell (Z97) or something Broadwell based, or wait for Skylake?

Same.

I won't update until my Sandy Bridge i5-2430m fails, so maybe like 3+ years (fingers crossed). Meaning Cannonlake/Icelake is the next option. I'll definitely wind up splurging on something real nice then.

In the meantime I may replace my Venue 8 Pro, but with what I have no idea, maybe a Atom x7-Willow Trail device, or maybe not, its fast enough for what it is, so I'd have to be real impressed to upgrade (and we all can see Airmont won't do much).
