You’re White? You’re hired!

Businesses across China are employing White male actors to pose as employees during public events, CNN has learned.

Well….this is weird.

American actor Jonathan Zatkin tells reporters he was paid roughly $300 to pretend to be the vice-president of an Italian jewelry company and was once presented as the partner of a Chinese jewelry chain.

“I was up on stage with the mayor of the town, and I made a speech about how wonderful it was to work with the company for 10 years and how we were so proud of all of the work they had done for us in China,” Zatkin laughs. “They put up a big bandstand and the whole town was there and some other local muckety-mucks.”

It’s all a part of a thriving system called “White Guy Window-Dressing” — a service that allows business owners to “rent” White men to pose as faux employees and business partners in a bid to attract high-end consumers. Such establishments regularly hire Westerners whose only qualification is their Caucasian features. Chinese author Zhang Haihua breaks it down for us. The philosopher behind Think Like Chinese says the phenomenon is rooted in the Chinese concept of “face,” which is the positive public expression of one’s identity.

“Face, we say in China, is more important than life itself. Because Western countries are so developed, people think they are more well off, so people think that if a company can hire foreigners, it must have a lot of money and have very important connections overseas. So when they really want to impress someone, they may roll out a foreigner.”

Yeah, there's a similar racket here in Japan, but for weddings.

Anyone who's English speaking and white can pose as a priest at a Western-style wedding; the groom and bride don't care about credentials as they're just looking an 'authentic experience'.

I had a friend who'd do two or three weddings every Sunday, making about 15,000-20,000 each (for two hours)... so, almost USD$600 a weekend to dress in a robe and recite vows no one will understand.:awe:

Kind of reminds me of a past job I had. I worked for a Mandarin owned online computer sales company on Long Island for a couple of years. It was evident early on that I was hired primarily for the fact that I spoke English, and only the owner and his brother spoke English well enough to understand. They had me do all of their voice mail greetings, and I was the only support tech / RMA person. Basically if there was an issue with a part, or any kind of order or shipping problems, you had to deal with me. They even let me choose my own title , I had business cards that said chief technology officer.

I got to go to a lot of conferences and be the representative for the company which was great. At one point they sent me to Vegas for ICC, put me up in a Suite in Treasure Island, and my wife was pampered all week. Another time I went to an AMD plant in Austin to discuss the future plans for their processors. That job definitely has some sweet perks, but I had to move so I left a couple of years later.

That said, I don't know about being rented, but if I was offered another job with a Chinese company for the fact that I spoke English, I'd probably take it.
