They can walk and eat and speak in grunts, which is pretty much all many Americans can do.

I like to think of a Zombie as a type of beast acting as a disease reservoir. Sure, they are former people, but any intelligence / soul that once might have resided in them has long since departed. Usually, the viral plague is "alive" (if you consider viruses alive). Upon reanimation, the undead are actually not dead, but they are no longer human.

Well on the walking dead they showed they had brain stem activity which controls the heart and the lungs so in a medical sense they're technically not dead. If it was the case then terri shaivo was zombie for all those years.

It depends, there are many flavors of zombie to chew over, for example:

- Rage virus: crazy alive human with super-adrenaline strength and speed. Rage has rendered them mindless in the sense they are incapable of rational thought.

- Reanimation virus: the virus is alive but the human host is dead: no brain function, rational thought.

- Supernatural reanimation ("when Hell is fiull, the dead walk the Earth"): the evil force moves the body, the mind and soul are gone.

We don't normally allow a virus or evil force to vote, but the rage virus zombies might be with us now in the Tea Party.

Most all zombie types rely upon the fact that the person has died and some mysterious force brings their body back to life, so just imagine a brain dead person in a coma somehow moving about and functioning without the aid of life support machines.

The body exists but the mind is gone.
