If someone has an old laptop with an older version of Windows and totally forgot what the login is for the system, is there a way to still access the system??

Not sure which version of Windows it is...maybe 98 or 2000?

You could boot to a linux live distribution and access the files on the hard drive, don't know how to reset the password info so that you could boot into windows though.

I think you can access the default admin account if you start it up in safe mode. There is either no password or the password is admin by default. From there you can go to the user settings and change the password for the account you want access to. Of course this doesn't work if you have previously set a password for the default admin account.

There's a .sam file that contains all the password information for Windows NT, 2000 and XP. There is a boot utility that will let you wipe the sam file contents essentially setting the password back to blank. I don't have the link handy but you can google it.

Like Fritzo said, just hit cancel or mash the escape button. 98 and ME's login passwords are a joke. They literally don't do anything.

iirc, Hiren Ultimate BootCD supports this and so do lots of other diagnostic and troubleshooting bootable utilities. Never actually used them personally though.

Yea, it even works on a Novell Netware login box, too.
