LOL, have you ever heard of At-Will employment. He sure can discriminate. I used to work at a grocery store about ohh 7 years ago, and this guy got canned because his hair was too long, and it was prefectly legal.

Granted it is your father business but he cannot discriminate. if he isn't hiring you based on your looks that just bad. I'm sorry dude. >>

There's a difference between construction work, and retail work.

And yes, an employer can and will discriminate based on appearence. I do everyday. Your employees represent your company, therefore you can demand a clean cut look.

First of all, unless you live in East Bumfück, Kentucky, there are lots of places you could get a job that will have no problem with the way you look. How you look is an expression of who you are, and if someone doesn't like it, fück them! That being said, if you choose to have this outlook, you _will_ take crap for it. There are a lot of close-minded, superficial people out there. It comes down to what your priorities are. Are you willing to conform yourself to a certain image to obtain your desired job, or are you willing to conform yourself to a certain job to retain your desired image. An ideal situation would be the best of both worlds; a job you enjoy doing, that doesn't have unreasonable restrictions on dress/appearance. I hope never to have to let my job become my identity, I am who I am and my job is a means of supporting my lifestyle.

That being said, I don't have a particularly radical way of looking/dressing (short, kinda spiky hair and lots of jeans/doubled t-shirts). So it's all relative in the end.

Nah. First of all, with a receding hairline, the best thing you could do is keep it short. Second of all, you *will* learn more about many, many things by working at your father's store than by working at a fast food joint.

If you can get in the right mindset, you have a great opportunity to learn and earn here... and all that's asked is that you get a haircut. I really don't think it's that much of a sacrifice. Try not to let your physical appearance be your only means of self-expression, there are other ways.

I don't see a problem with how you look. As long as the hair and goate are neat kept and groomed, why would it scare away business from a hardware store? It's just a teenage kid doing a job. I worked at my family's H&R Block from 14-18yrs old. Started off as the copier and then as an income tax preparer. I had hair down to my shoulder blades. My parents never really minded too much. I do remember, though, when my mother told me to get my hair trimmed, she meant to get it cut and maintained no longer than shoulder blade level.
The problem is not how he looks. The problem is getting his father to accept his looks and stop being so conservative. I could see his father's point of view if it was completely greasy, unkept and dyed purple.

It's your hair. Do whatever you want with it. If you like it, don't cut it for anyone.

It's your Dad's business. He can do whatever he wants with it.

Personally, I have no respect for anyone who judges other people based n what they look like. If that was always the case, Lincoln would not have been President, Einstein would have been a janitor, and none of you would have any music, because all those guys in bands would be janitors too. WWJD (he would have been a shepard).

hehe, chop chop chop! my dad said the same thing about my little brother and his "colored hair" when he was trying to look for a job. he couldn't find one...and then he finally got rid of the coloring and was immediately accepted...to this day, he hasn't messed with his hair, and has kept it clean. point of the story: keep it nice and clean...it's worth the car i tell you!

You can be young and idealistic by saying that people shouldn't judge others by their looks, but get a grip! It happens constantly and is unlikely to change anytime soon.

If you don't want to get 'clean-cut,' then don't. Get a job someplace else. If you're dad's store is as *profitable* as you say, there must be other work around. And if you're really not willing to cut/shave, remember that you're not above fast food. (and they might even make you shave).

I think that your Dad is trying to teach you a lesson about the "real world". He's not going to hire you simply because you are his son. Shave you face and cut your hair and work for your Dad and get you car or go out searching for a job in the fast food industry and have them tell you to shave your face and cut your hair. I think the former is a better alternative, but that is my opinion. I happen to also think that your Dad is very admirable for standing his ground on what type of employee he will and won't hire.

agreed, standing up for your principles isn't always the 'right' thing to do
