I'm interested in how religious people think about that. I presume that they have a bigger burden of proof than "well dad said that its true so..."
There's strong incentive to perpetuate beliefs no matter how ridiculous to protect the routine of everyday life. In actuality beliefs are cheap compared to consequential changes. For example, people tend to believe in the sanctity of truth even if they stretch it habitually, and if anything tend to be indignant when that's pointed out.
This has little to do with religion per se.
