The U.S. Army & Navy and their soldiers thinks Arma sucks too

http://www.nationaldefensemagazine....sHighlightGrowingRoleofVideoGameTraining.aspx

"Currently, the Army is conducting a competition for the flagship of its Games for Training program, with an award of approximately $44.5 million over five years. It wants another first-person shooter to replace Bohemia Interactive’s Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2)."

“The industry needs to find a way to get past the older code that’s sitting out there,” he said. “They [soldiers] look at these simulators, and they don’t take them seriously because they don’t look as good as what they’re playing in their living rooms.”

Good way to miss the point...which isn't I.Q....but tactics...funny.

Easily fixed, just throw in a blue cellophane filter and hyper lens glare! That'll make em happy!

What soldier complains about graphics in a tool that's supposed to teach them teamwork/coordination as a unit? Let's watch them do the same thing with Battlefield or Call of Duty....no other platform allows the sheer amount of control as VBS does.

Competition is always good though

Just a heads up, Beta starts today. I've downloaded it but haven't checked it out, yet.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/06/24/arma-3-alpha-grows-up-will-be-beta-soon/

All good things must come to an end, and the Arma 3 Alpha is pretty good (Steam says I’ve played it for a healthy 36 hours). If you’re still considering buying it, you only have one more day left to buy it at the alpha price of €24.99, £19.99, $32.99. Tomorrow the Alpha fades out, like a flare sputtering its last embers of warning light, and the beta replaces it. It has more official content: 10 vehicles, 7 weapons, more showcase missions (Combined Arms, Supports, Commanding & Night), 2 multiplayer scenarios and 4 challenges, and with it comes a base price of €34.99, £29.99, and $44.99. Think of it as a military upgrade, or a nice new pair of trousers.

The showcases include a new night mission, a look at the command mode, and a giant combined arms battle that uses some of the new hardware they’re shipping. They’re still only giving us Stratis, though, so the full game’s Altis remains tantalisingly out of reach for now. It’s also missing the Steam Workshop integration. When that eventually ships, players will be able to upload missions directly from the game’s editor to the Steam Workshop for others to test. That’s a big win for casual players looking for more content. If you already have the alpha and you’re impatient, a little bird tells me all you need to do is right click the game on your Steam Library, select ‘properties’ then ‘betas’. If you opt into the development build there, the game will update

Maybe I'm a moron (this is definitely, definitely possible) but I bought the beta last night and was able to get into unlocked servers that weren't full, but then unable to join the game (the option was greyed out). I'm not familiar with how you got dropped in with Arma, is there something I'm missing?

Yeah, Arma still doesn't have intuitive menus.

After you connect to a server, you'll see boxes with Player Names on the right and a box of player roles (Medic, Sniper, etc.) on the left. Click on one of the roles (doesn't matter which one right now) and your name will appear under it. Then click OK on the lower right hand corner of the screen.

That should get you in... I think. I'm writing this from memory.

I've been playing a ton of Wasteland mode today and it is a blast.

Man...I love the way these weapons feel. Closest game ever to actually get shooting to feel like real shooting.

What I hate is still the movement mechanics. They're better than ArmA II, but they are still way too....I don't know the word...segregated.

It's like a tedious event to change between positions. I've gone through tac courses like the one in the challenge event. You move your body instinctively into positions, so in a realistic game environment, you should be able to do the same.

There's times it feels like I'm controlling a robot or something. "Okay...now run. Now stop!! Now crouch."

It needs to be smooth an intuitive to be realistic. Crysis + Tactical Mod nails the feeling. BI should take a lesson.

I've been "practicing" in Wasteland. Fun!

anyone have a preferred server

KoS Wasteland #1
KoS Wasteland #2
These apparently have 'Player Saves' but I haven't actually got them to work, yet.

Wasteland is like DayZ without zombies. You pick one of three teams (Opfor, Blufor, or Independent) and start off alone with just a pistol and a few supplies. It is up to you to find your teammates and decide how to approach the game.

I haven't played enough of the other game modes to recommend any other servers.

I really don't recommend wasteland or domination servers. What you are looking for is a good clan that plays a tactical organised military game. That is where the best games are.

If your in Europe try the Tier1Ops server, they play some pretty decent tactical games on their public server.

Yeah, but I'm familiarizing myself with ArmA controls in wasteland before I join a real group of ArmA pros. They're not exactly the noob friendly types.

We had this guy join us who had never played a PC game before, let alone Arma or any FPS. His friend has played with us for years and having talked about the game for ages (Arma 2 this is) the guy decided to join up and see what the fuss was about. We were doing what we call an ambush mission, we all got into a truck, drove out across the sandy lands of an Afghanistan like map and after about 3 minutes we hit a mine and we all died. Mission over.

The second mission that night we went in a HMMV column, this time in Takistan and the new guy joined the fire team who was in the front vehicle in the column. We got ambushed on the side of a valley, the initial damage taken was from an enemy placed mine - which destroyed the first vehicle and killed the new guy again.

This new guy played for 2 hours, all he did was get into a vehicle with his team mates and get blown up by a mine, twice in a row. We asked him how his first night was and he said "This is awesome".

You have to get a perverse pleasure out of all the training, out of all the tactics, communication and then potentially a good fire fight. Its not going to always be highly intense, you regularly can't find out where the darn enemy is, so you have to pop up, move around etc rather than staying put while taking fire. Sometimes you just get shot once and your dead and other times you clear a load of buildings that has no one in them. But there is no other game that can give you the wide range of combat options and where using real military tactics is a requirement to have a chance of completing the missions. It is an amazing game, nothing else like it exists, and I really think it is best played inside of a community that makes missions and runs a lot of the custom mods. The game becomes great when you play it with a team, soloing isn't really very entertaining.

I am loving the Alpha and beta, the new stances are great, the new vehicle mecahnics, the graphics, the sound its all much improved. The new fog for example is really nice and now we have a lot of our usual mods up (medic system, marker system, weapons and gear layout customisations) we are having a blast. Its not for everyone, just shooting targets can be tricky in Arma 3, but its a game that after 2 years I still haven't mastered, because there is a whole profession to be learned (soldering) to do well in this game.

Anybody else having framerate issues?

In MP I'm having a really hard time staying above 30 fps, no matter what I set visually. As long as it's above 30, it's pretty smooth, but below that, it's pretty bad.

I have an i7 930 @ 3.4Ghz and a GTX670, so it's not like I'm on really weak hardware or anything.

It's just strange that no matter what visual settings I pick, I can't get the framerate above 30-35 fps.
