This seems immoral to do. He's abusing his authority. Forcing someone to get baptised just because they want to take a bath just isn't right. Being there to give services to religious troops is one thing, but when he makes soldiers who just want to take a bath get baptised seems to infringe on seperation of church and state. He is in effect forcing religion onto people.

Yes but he's doing it for their own good . . . if they get killed out there they would go to Hell if not baptized in the Holy Spirit . . . Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and atheists are going to Hell anyway but why not give them one last opportunity to look into the light.

That is such bullshyt. A chaplain doing that would get courtmartialed.

Another internet rumor for Snopes.

Maybe, maybe not, HP. It's been my experience that Chaplains and Doctors pretty much get to do whatever they want. I wouldn't be surprised either way.

First, though, the soldiers have to go to one of Llano's hour-and-a-half sermons in his dirt-floor tent. Then the baptism takes an hour of quoting from the Bible

With all due respect, Dave, chaplains, regardless of their religion, and yes there are chaplains of more than one religion in the U.S. military forces, are ther to serve the needs of those who seek them out.

I am basing my doubts on experience.

If this is true, however, that chaplain should be disciplined.

I agree with you completely. Don't mistake what I said with being in agreement with what he is doing. I am particularly unhappy with the end of the article where he says he has a stash of raisins, candy, etc. If that is true then someone needs to give the lad a little guidance.

I have my doubts about the legitamacy of that story. But I will say when I was in Desert Storm I was attached to an MLRS unit that had a Chaplin who cursed worse than most of the soldiers in the unit. I guess he wanted to be different to gain acceptance or something.

The chaplins are there to administer services to those soldiers that WANT it. To dangle the chance to take a bath for conversion, and not even a real conversion, just a number, because they don't actually believe is just to inflate his self-esteem. He wants to feel important. Not only do I think he should be tossed out of his position in the Army, I think his church should take a deep look at him and see if that's the kind of person they want representing them.

How pristine would that tank of water be after a bunch of dirty soldier used it?

OK, I'll bite, OK - What WOULD Jesus do?

Think he'd be supporting the War effort?

Hmmm.. water into wine!

I hope the US Army provides this "chaplain" away to reach a greater audience. Say, a less than honorable discharge!

Geez, some of you are going overboard. He only has enough water to baptize someone. It's not like he has a 50000 gallon water truck.

I dont see what the problem is.

Are you going to blame the Chaplain because baptisms involve dunking someone in water?

Stuff like this always goes on in the military.

I had a friend who went into the Airforce, and when me and his family went up to see his graduation one of the Drill Instructors was telling us how they "found God," because on Sundays or whatever days they have religous services those who want to go get to go, but whoever doesnt want to has to stay behind and has to do some chores or whatever.

So because most people want whatever small break they can get, most of them went.
