If I had to? Navy...most of my family that went into the armed forces went Navy. Why break tradition?

Not sure....

- Close friend is a marine. He was a class clown type, and while he maintained that aspect of his personality, he went from being chubby to being so in shape that hardened rock seemed soft in comparison. Then there's the whole Full Metal Jacket thing (that was a real drill sargeant btw - he was originally hired as a consultant, but when asked was able to insult the director, Stanley Kubrick, for 15 minutes straight without repeating himself, and was actually put in the movie).
- Navy - the whole water thing. I love the ocean & fishing. It also appeals to my lazy side - I've heard Navy basic training is more lenient compared to other branches.
- AF - while flying would own, it probably wouldn't happen - but I might be a mechanic. I've always been good with, and enjoyed using, my hands. While I'm not adept with engines, I could be taught.

That's not to say I wouldn't enjoy the army, I just don't know.

Regardless, I'd hate to fight in a war I don't agree with or for a leader whose IQ I beat by 60 points easily, so would not enlist currently...

Im 18 and have lived around military my whole life, my dad was originally an Air Force mechanic and my stepfather is an MP in the army. If your looking for education and a career outside of the military the Navy is perfect. What else could you with the endless time you have on that ship?

However the Air Force is almost equally as good and its a lot more traditional. If your smart the Navy or the AF are your only options. If your an idiot or have no other choice your looking at the Army. But trust me, the army is turning to crap, plus Ive always thought the name was dumb. Sounds like a really strong handjob.

I'm lazy and uncomprimising so the Marines is out of the question. The Coast Guard is for pansies.

Actually Marine education/intelligence entrance standards are virtually identical to the Navy's. I think they used to be the same a few years ago and then the Navy bumped theirs up a few points. But functionally speaking, theyre the same. And actually i think the Marines will benefit you more career wise than the Navy.

Here's why: Because of their small size (8% of the armed forces) and nature, Marines are more tight knit than the other services and often portray a more lasting impression with civilians. Most people don't really realize how small we are because the Marines are always in the news and on the forefront of the public eye. Because of the bond all Marines have, you are likely to carry that bond into the civilian world where it may help your career. A buddy of mine is in law enforcement and has gotten considerable perks with his commanding officer also being a Marine. The public image also helps in certain areas as no matter what people think of the military or the Marines, they will instantly assume you are disciplined and can get the job done.

That being said, if you even THINK about joining for tangible benefits (school, career, etc) dont consider the USMC. WAY too much work, sweat, blood, and BS for the same benefits you get in the other branches. Join the USMC if you want challenge, discipline, etc.

I wasnt referring to entry level requirements alone. You already mentioned the reason why the Marines is worse for education oppurtunities, too much work while comparitively the Navy atmosphere is ideal for learning. In all fairness, any person walking out from a term in any branch of the military is already 10 steps ahead of the kid who hasn't. Generally speaking...

It would depend on what kind of job you can get in each feild.

I mean..flying hellis and Airplanes would rock..But dont you have to have like a 4.0 and be really smart to do any of those?

Navy wouldnt be so bad either..I have a friend in the Navy and he works in a sub. He seems to like it but like you said..they have a lot of free time and end up playing a lot of Halo haha. He also makes decent money.

Army...No way

but then again..I am not a fan of the government or the war...so i wont be going anywhere.

Great point on making decent money in the Navy. What are you gonna spend it on? Seagull drop-in delivery service? Thats all you can do with your money is save, until you find shore and blow it all in one night in a drunken frenzy involving loud music, angry police, and a korean hooker.

From a com. officer's point of view:

AF - Don't bother if you didn't attend the Academy, you'll be snubbed at. Wide selection of tech fields but as I said, you'll be snubbed at big time and advance very slowly.
Navy - Good possibilities for those interested in higher engineering tech, such as Nuclear, Electrical, and software stuff. Most engineers in the Navy are typically very happy from what I've seen.
Army - Excellent training for Civil/Mechanical engineering (army corps of engineers). Most will leave after 10 years then start their own business.

if you really have the choice then neither...
otherwise, I guess it really depends on what type of person you are.
Most people will "survive" AF or Navy service (let alone coast guard) while only selected few can get along with army or marines life.

It might look cool when you're 18, but trust me, marines is anything but cool, its hard time, hard work, hard people, and hard core. But if you're cut out for it, it just might suit you.
