I wasn't aware of their being a troop shortage after 9/11. More importantly I was not gung ho about it, I didn't berate anti-war protestors and call people that didn't support the operation panzies and stuff like that. But no, I didn't enlist. I dind't put my money where my mouth is because I didn't mouth off about it. Now there are a lot of mouthy chickenhaws on this board and they should put their money where there mouth.

(Also It wouldn't make their non-performance acceptable, it would just mean I don't practice what I preach).
Which "chickenhawks on this thread" are you referring to?

Is it me? or is it Mill?

Hehe. Sorry. That's the seond time I've made that typo. (if i meant thread I would have said "in"). I meant board. Weird. I meant board. Apologies.

Edit: jeebus the typos are bad tonight.
Heh. No problem...

FWIW, I was very against the Iraq invasion--easily the primary reason I voted against Bush.

However, I see the military as a tool of the government (albeit a tool with a very human face), and as we're a government of the people, every citizen has a right to voice an opinion on their use.

Um...Ok. It's the AP whether that matters or not.

LOL - at this rate it's only a matter of time until Newsmax is considered too liberal, and the only reliable news source will be stormfront.org.

That's nothing, by the time '08 rolls around Rove will have convnced the lemmings *facts* are too liberal and shouldn't be trusted.

WTH is wrong with stormfront.org? It is the only site that actually prints the "real" news. Damn, I didn't even know that place existed. And I thought DU and Newsmax were cesspools of partisan hackery and hate.

Seems to me like there is a possibility that he didn't completely fulfill his reserve obligation. Sometimes the reserves will just overlook it and discharge you, but they seem to be really hard up for personnel these days. For example, my cousin was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year, but he remains on active duty in the Army. If its not a paperwork error then we can see that they will do everything necessary to avoid a draft including recalling personnel that have already served their country. Would a move like that surprise anyone? If true it is a slap in the face of those that have already sacrificed themselves in the military.

There will be no draft. President Bush said so.

If this is evidence the draft is starting, how come you haven't left the country yet?

Again with the insults.
It's the truth.
So, did you enlist after September 11?
What does 9/11 have to do with Iraq?
If you're going to insult a group of people for not enlisting to help a cause they support, I think it's valid to know whether or not you enlisted to help a cause you support.

Last I checked, Infohawk didn't support the war in Iraq.

This is just a backdoor draft.

Don't worry, I will hightail if a real draft ever starts.

Here's a what-if scenario...what if the next draft starts as a result of a foreign government declaring all-out war on the American mainland?

Would you still leave the country?

Under the circumstances, he wouldn't have been required to actually do anything in the Reserves. An IRR reservist (which I will be in about 2 months) doesn't have any routine duties, but is subject to recall as needed.

I assume it's a mistake someone in government made and hope it's corrected...If not, yes, the government is doing wrong.

Here's the back of what an enlistment contract would look like for those interested (Thank you google):
a. FOR ALL ENLISTEES: If this is my initial enlistment, I must serve a total of eight (8) years. Any part of that service not served on active duty must be served in a Reserve Component unless I am sooner discharged.
b. If I am a member of a Reserve Component of an Armed Force at the beginning of a period of war or national emergency declared by Congress, or if I become a member during that period, my military service may be extended without my consent until six (6) months after the end of that period of war.
c. As a member of a Reserve Component, in time of war or national emergency declared by the Congress, I may be required to serve on active duty (other than for training) for the entire period of the war or emergency and for six (6) months after its end.
d. As a member of the Ready Reserve I may be required to perform active duty or active duty for
training without my consent (other than as provided in item 8 of this document) as follows:
(1) in time of national emergency declared by the President of the United States, I may be ordered to
active duty (other than for training) for not more than 24 consecutive months.
(2) I may be ordered to active duty for 24 months, and my enlistment may be extended so I can complete 24 months of active duty, if:
(a) I am not assigned to, or participating satisfactorily in, a unit of the Ready Reserve; and
(b) I have not met my Reserve obligation; and
(c) I have not served on active duty for a total of 24 months.
(3) I may be ordered to perform additional active duty training for not more than 45 days if I have not
fulfilled my military service obligation and fail in any year to perform the required training duty satisfactorily.
If the failure occurs during the last year of my required membership in the Ready Reserve, my
enlistment may be extended until I perform that additional duty, but not for more than six months.
(4) When determined by the President that it is necessary to support any operational mission, I may be
ordered to active duty as prescribed by law, if I am a member of the Selected Reserve.

If he isn't dead he should joyfully go to Iraq so he can die there for democracy. What can he be thinking? Americans have become so selfish....

I'm sure I'll be getting my papers any day now....

1 war is enough, the guy could be in horrible phyiscal shape as well. The military is desparate, I guess getting rid of 700,000 soldiers wasn't a good idea.

Would you still leave the country?

No, if a country attacked our mainland, I would fight for America. But that's probably the farthest-fetching "what-if" scenario you could consider.

The only countries that have the power to declare an assault on our mainland are China and Russia, period. That is why the talk about the imminent threat posed by Saddam, the talk of Saddam putting a mushroom cloud in a major American city, was such a load of sh1t.

It is in NO country's best interest to threaten the US. For a smaller country to do so would be suicide. For a larger country to do so would be M.A.D. Besides, this is a global economy now, it's not like we're fighting for trade routes on the high seas or new world plunder.

The likely what-if scenario is that our excursion in the Middle East will escalate into neighboring Iran, Israel, and any other Arab/Muslim nation in the region. And such a conflict will be a direct result of our choice to invade Iraq.
