i'm willing to bet that the people using arrow keys are left handed.

if you're right handed, thats too close to the mouse and also there's much more reach to get to other keys. also the arrow keys are too close together, more comfortable for wasd.

i am willing to *bet* that most people who use WASD are right-handed

i can use either hand equally well but am using my *left* with WASD as it has become a *habit* and i DO write with my right hand [preferring the 'normal' slant]

BTW, i *tried* the arrow keys long ago ... i think it used to be more *popular*... the WASD has *simply* become a habit
[if i use the arrow keys the mouse goes in my left hand ... does anyone use arrow keys with the mouse on the right?
:Q

--or WASD with the mouse on the left?
:shocked:

i want a better poll

arrow keys used to be fine before mouse look was created. after that, wasd became superior

I prefer ESDF. Plenty of keys for binds and its the natural hand position for typing.

WASD here.

I used to use the arrow keys because I liked how they lined up properly as opposed to WASD where the W isn't directly above the S. But then I got tired of always having to slide my keyboard off to one side and switched to WASD.

I used arrow keys when I was a keyboard only doom 1 noob. Arrow keys are very noobish IMHO.

Today I use:
WASD for movement and...
QE
ZXC
RFV
TGB
`12345
<tab>
<alt>
<space>
<ctrl>
<caps>

ALL of these with the left hand that never moves.

So that's like 22 keys other than movement that I can hit without having to stop moving.

How do you accomplish the same with the Arror keys?

I've seen others that use ESDF for movement which opens up a few more.

My own personal oddity:
I never use my mousewheel to scroll between weapons. It's to slow and innacurate to jump to the correct weapon. Instead I use mwheelup for one weapon, mwheeldn for another and mouse3 for a 3rd. I lets me put three weapons on my mousewheel while maintaining digital selection accuracy.

I've seen people use a joystick + mouse combo very effectively. (joystick replaces wasd).

The people I've seen use a joystick without a mouse are really good (at being target practice hehehe).

Why?? I dont see why people would use their main hand, if you like, on the keyboard. Aiming with the mouse is much more important. Right handed or left handed arrow keys are still viable. Im a right handed arrow keyer. Right hand on the mouse, left hand on the arrow keys.

I can't use WSAD. I use WXAD, that way I can stay on the keyboard longer. Yes, pathetic, I know.

Back in DOOM days, I was on numpad. When Descent came along, WXAD got into movement and numpad for aiming. Didn't really get into WXAD+Mouse til Enemy Territory.

umm ...left handed people would be using th emouse in their left hand and their right hand on the arrow keys...

just sounds stupid the way you do it., but to each his own

My best friend plays that way and binds his rocket launcher to the S key. Seems a decent enough method, just not one I would choose.

The hilarious part is when one of us sits down after the other has played. He'll panic reaching for his rocket launcher and go running around backwards. I panic and blow myself up like clockwork a couple seconds after I fail to back up.

In my early days of gaming I used the arrow keys, page up/down, etc. Then once Rocket Arena came out for Quakeworld combined with the LPBs that were becoming common I was no longer competitive and was forced to use the mouse but I didn't go the WASD way like most...

Right mouse = forward
Left mouse = fire
Thumb mouse = backward
a = strafe left
s = strafe right

Doing this leaves ALL of the keys around a & s open for other stuff. Far superior to your wasd based configs.

BTW I'm right handed and used arrows w/right hand way back then.

I'd say shortly after Quake 2. Have you been living under a rock?

Why is this even a question????
Obviously WASD is far superior. There are many advantages to WASD. The first of which is being able to use your thumb on the space bar to jump. The other is that there are numerous other keys surrounding them that are quickly and easily accessible. There are NO advantages to using the arrow keys. Unless you need to look at the keys each time to figure out what they do and the little arrow signs help you remember which one is forward and which one's are backwards, left, and right. And if that's the case, you've got issues.

And for you freaks who use the right mouse button for forward, that's just wrong on so many levels. There's something very unnatural about it.

Do you ever use your spacebar for anything? I tried placing my hand on those keys above and it made using the spacebar very awkward.

How the hell do you type then? Those are the normal touch type home keys.

I admit that's a pretty goofy config but I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work great.

I said that. I really cannot imagine being able to play an FPS with any degree of accuracy or speed without using the standard WASD setup.

Arrow keys forever! What do you use?

Ive updated the original poll with a few new options.

Also added the left/right handed poll. I dont see how its relevant but well ya never know there might be some kinda pattern here. Im betting all the WSAD people are damn lefties :frown:

i used to use arrows and have played shogo - in fact all of my friends and I used arrows back in the day

after quake 2 though we switch to wasd

now a days though its clear that wasd or other positions on the keyboard are far, far superior...

even shifting wasd over to like.. esdf rdfg etc to get access to more small keys with the fingers is better

the best setup I've ever seen is my friend's where he uses asdf and right mouse to move forward - he plays Q2CTF still and is probably the best player who still plays CTF regularly.

I just cant get it like he does, he is really good and I'm sure it has to do with playing Quake 2 for what 8 year or something that makes it so natural to him.

Here's my config for all games. Started playing it back in Doom2 LAN party days. Used for all FPS's and currently WoW.

D = forward
S = strafe left
F = strafe right
C = reverse
Spacebar = jump
Z = duck/sit

Mouselook always on.

I cant imagine playing an FPS at all without arrow keys. But we'll soon solve this with a game of somthing, once its decided what game that should be.

You're trying to pick a fight because you're insecure about your control choice. The rest of us are comfortable with ours.
