Arrow keys vs WSAD keys

EADG

E = forward
A = L strafe
D = reverse
G = R strafe

C = duck/crouch
space = jump
S = L lean
F = F lean

etc...

i have pretty big hands.

that won't work too well if you are on waxd. Maybe doable with the arrow keys or numpad.

Unless you are playing on the keyboard for both movement and aiming? I haven't done that since Descent days. Mouse is just oh so much more aim-able.

And for those who claim arrow keys are old school, you are late by a few years. True old school is numpad Or if you really want to go back, it's A Z < > or even earlier JIKM and AWSZ.

Note that you can't shove your keyboard off to the left on a laptop and numpads are nonexistant. So you are pretty much forced to use ASWD, not that I'd use anything else on a normal keyboard.

Having a competition between WSAD and arrow key users over Half-Life or BF2 is about the most retarded thing I've heard all day.

How in any way is that supposed to determine which is better? They're exactly the freaking same, just located in a different spot on the keyboard.

If I was to say I used the pageUP and pageDOWN keys for my vertical looking then you could figure that I sucked at these games.

I think people with brown eyes see better than blue eys, BTW. Let's get 10 random people together, have them play CS and whichever group wins obviously has the better type of eye.

I tried to learn wasd, and it felt so unnatural. I made a bunch keystroke errors, got pissed, and decided I didn't need to reinvent the wheel. I already knew how to access keys from asdf so that's what I used. The advantage is that it feels natural to use keys t, g, v, and over. That alone is 17 buttons plus spacebar. The only disadvantage is that I can't fluidly strafe right while jump+crouching.

No WADS... jeesh. Try EDSF - that way, there are more keys around your fingers to access, plus the physically raised line on the F keeps your hand in the right place.

Plus, it's easy to switch over from WADS since there are no freaky combinations to learn (mouse forward???)

I'm left-handed and I use WASD. But I also use the mouse with my right hand (always have).

I have an n52, but I haven't taken the time to really learn how to play with it. (I don't play many FPS games anyways)

WSAD all the way. Though I will admit that I use a non-standard arrangement for many of my other keys-->F to jump, Space to use, C for crouch, V for prone/flashlight (depending on game)

I now feel special. I use the following:
E = Forward
D = Reverse
A = Strafe Left
S = Strafe Right

Don't remember why that started, but I got use to it and now I prefer it.

Come on guys, if you think arrow keys are better then someone needs to get shot. If you use arrow keys it's a million times harder to use the mouse and have multiple easy to access hotkeys, also WASD is slightly angled to the left, conforming to the natural feeling of holding a mouse to the right and using a keyboard to the left. Don't even try to argue the point.

Ive more than tried to argue the point, although i accept everyone has their own scheme that works best for them, thats no fun! I wanna kick some WASD ass at half life 2 deathmatch with my arrow keys damnit :frown: Maybe CSS... hate it but cant deny its popularity.

Even thou I'm right handed I've used my left hand for the mouse and right hand for the keyboard, even when not gaming, since my 486 days.

For FPS games I use the arrow keys / num pad from Doom up through Half-Life. The only other FPS that I've played since HL was FEAR, and even with that one I used the num pad which gave me 16 keys to set up how I wanted.

if I use arrow keays, both my hands would be too close to each other. since i am using left hand for keyboard, right for mouse.

putting my left and on 'wsad' position is very natural.

not to mention it's easier to chat during the game. instead of repositioning both of your hands, i can just move my right hand.

Didn't read through the thread, but I think WASD is also lame. I use ESDF instead, because it gives you more binding options for the ring and pinkie fingers. How anyone (right handed at least) can use the arrow keys and have an effective config is beyond me.

I use ewfd in WoW.

f has the little button on the key, so I know I'm on it.
Number keys are in reach because left hand is rotated.
Pinky is over Tab key.
Don't have to shift left hand to type in a chat window.
