Do not use your dvd burner to read dvd as it is slower or will wear it out faster then you would expect it to last.
Have bought a couple of these and they work great, even able to read disc that scratched while my dvd burner cannot read at all

Likewise. My old Artec was louder and slower than the Samsung I got from inside a Cendyne box.

a dvdrom is faster, better at reading burned disc, scratched disc, why bother?
I have 2 8x dvd burner and I don't need anymore thought. I just want to save money and be versatile. So that's why I use two dvdrom for both my dvd burner.
Plus I can't burn 4x media at 8x let alone 16x ^_^
16x dvdburning is like 7min11sec to 7min30sec. It's pathetic

You are totally correct - a discreet reader can do a much better job of reading DVDs and CDs. I was broken-hearted when my old 4X liteon gave out

I got an artec dvd drive a long time ago, when they were $10AR. The drive had problems reading from many of the dvd's I burned. When I checked online, many had similar problems. If anyone is considering this drive, I highly suggest you research others experiences with this manufacturer.

what is not helpful is two word posts like "not hot" and "that sucks"

hard to please everyone, one say it dead after a few months then another that say its most noisy. oh brother... Just because one out of 10 have problems doesn't mean everyone will too.. it's out of manufacturer quality control.
This is for people who don't want to spend much just to be able to read burned dvdroms conventiently. Most burner have problems reading their own burned media which is why a rom drive is needed. From my experience, a burner is to burn stuff and nothing else.

Exactly what I've been looking for, it's true black, not char-grey (the color dell uses) so it matches my Coolermaster Praetorian perfectly. Drives such as the NEC 5200 DVD burner are dell grey and don't match black cases.

And I take StorageReview's rating of this drive to heart, they've never been wrong about anything, probably the most thorough review site out there (except AT, but even AT's 'storage reviews' are kinda weak compared to SR.)

lol, so true that's like saying an amd xp2400 that was made in 2003 is worse then the ones in 2005
he was talking about 1-2 years of difference
what really matters if its new, used or refurbish.
